Cultivate - Fall 2008

As we cultivate peace and happiness in ourselves, we also nourish peace and happiness in those we love.
Thich Nhat Hanh

I want to cultivate the seed that was placed in me until the last small twig has grown.
Kathe Kollwitz

I have often wished I had time to cultivate modesty ... but I am too busy thinking about myself.
Edith Sitwell

We're often asked how we overcome the "blank page blues" when deadlines loom. The secret is to actively cultivate your creativity – purposely put yourself into new experiences, gain new insights, meet new people.

One recent example: Team High Point attended the 2008 Minnesota Interactive Marketing Association (MIMA) Summit. As with any conference, some sessions were better than others. But all helped nurture new ideas that will bloom into compelling copy, winning concepts and successful campaigns. Curious? Check out some resources from the Summit blog.

Keep on cultivating. (It's also a good way to try something new!)

HOT POINT

E-Waste Recycling
At High Point, we keep on top of technology – not only the latest tools for interactive marketing that are proliferating the need for content exponentially – but also the tools to do our own jobs every day. That means a regular supply of new computers and electronic gadgets of every kind. And with Best Buy testing its free e-waste recycling program in Baltimore, San Francisco and Minnesota stores, finally we have an easy way to get rid of the old. If you haven't already taken advantage, here's the scoop: You can take in up to two items per day at participating stores. Learn more.

TRY THIS

Work Everywhere
Despite the shaky economy, many people are still traveling for work, even if it just means going across town to a client meeting or down the street to a local coffee shop for a change of scene. When you are out and about, there is a wealth of online tools to support your roving work (and play) life. Check out Digital Nomad's Tools & Tips. Christina has been playing around with Jott, a service that converts voicemail to e-mail, text messages, lists and more.

WORDWISE

Where Did You Get That?
You know it's important to cite your sources when writing an article or white paper. Proper citation of your sources is important to avoid claims of plagiarism, to give your writing authority and to help your readers find additional information.

When you find your sources online (who doesn't?), proper citation can be a little tricky. While citations for published books and periodicals are typically uniform, online sources don't always provide the same information in the same format. In addition, different organizations may have their own specific styles for citing online sources.

In general, you will want to include the following information in your citations:

  • Author or editor's name [Last name, then first]
  • Article title
  • Article date [when available]
  • Publication name
  • Date accessed
  • Web site title
  • URL

HIGH POINT HIGHLIGHTS

The Blake School
For more than 100 years, The Blake School has provided excellent education and college preparation for Twin Cities students. Although the school is very well known and highly respected, Blake sought a way to truly differentiate its messaging and look from other schools of its caliber. In particular, Blake wanted to ensure the admissions material accurately and compellingly conveyed the unique Blake experience to prospective families.

Peggy Lauritsen Design Group (PLDG) teamed with High Point Creative to develop a comprehensive strategy for the school's recruitment communications. Drawing on research provided by the school, we tailored the pieces so that the admissions staff can provide customized information to prospective families. This included an introductory brochure, admissions portfolio with "tell sheets" (as opposed to sell sheets) and a series of print ads.
