Sunshine - Early Summer 2007

Live in the sunshine, swim the sea, drink the wild air.
Ralph Waldo Emerson

Those who bring sunshine into the lives of others cannot keep it from themselves.
James Barrie

The art of art, the glory of expression and the sunshine of the light of letters, is simplicity.
Walt Whitman

You just can't help but feel good this time of year in Minnesota. The endless days of sunshine after the long dark winter. The promise of the lake beckoning on sultry Friday afternoons. With Kate enjoying the better part of early summer in Italy, sunshine is on all our minds lately. Meanwhile, the rest of us here at High Point are pinning a few sheets of paper up to the creative clothesline, listening to how the breeze blows and trying to make our clients' lives a little sunnier one project at a time.

TRY THIS

The "Neighborhood" Watering Hole
When we can't get away from the computer, we like to see what's going on outside our little world. One cool place to check out is the Africam, a Web cam that streams live footage from a watering hole in South Africa. With the time difference, late evening here in Minnesota is a great time to catch some savannah rays and see giraffes, antelopes, zebras and wildebeests taking a cool drink in the heat of the day.

HOT POINT

Cell Phone Use is Growing
According to a recent study by the Centers for Disease Control, more than a quarter of young adults aged 18-29 only have cell phones. This shift away from landline phones affects the phone industry, 911 emergency providers and polling organizations – all of whom rely heavily on random calls to households with wired phones.

WORDWISE

Utilize vs. Use
Seems like everyone has a grammar or usage pet peeve. One we have involves utilize vs. use. According to The American Heritage Dictionary of English, choose "utilize" when you want to say "find a practical use for." For example: The IT staff was unable to use the old computers (which might mean they couldn't even turn them on) and The IT staff was unable to utilize the old computers (which means they couldn't find someone to donate them to or even scrap them for parts). Bottom line: Utilize is not just a fancier way to say use.

HIGH POINT HIGHLIGHTS

American Medical Systems (AMS)
With a publication date timed to coincide with a major medical conference in sunny Anaheim, California, AMS re-launched Colleagues in Urology, a respected industry newsletter. AMS engaged High Point Creative as the managing editor for the updated bimonthly publication, which covers advances in men's pelvic health. One article in the May/June issue features an interview with Barrett Brashers of Virginia Beach, Virginia. He is a prostate cancer survivor who underwent a new male sling procedure to correct his incontinence. The article was also featured in the US TOO® International Prostate Cancer and Support Network's monthly publication – proving that with a little planning, an investment in copy can pay off by playing double duty to multiple audiences.
