This time of year it’s important to shield your eyes —
not from the August sun, but from “Back to School”
and (most disturbingly) those first holiday gift
displays. Why focus on fall and winter when we can
enjoy our last few weeks of summer fun? To help fuel
that enjoyment, our theme this month is
Laugh. And our more in-depth article, "Word
Wise," is on vacation in lieu of lighter fare that pays
homage to what’ve learned from all those great and
not-so-great summer blockbusters.

Have You Tried the Milk?
Now that Amazon.com
offers delicious delights in their Gourmet Food
category, some customers are
having fun writing outlandish reviews. One popular
favorite is Tuscan Whole Milk, with more
than 700 reviews. As you read and laugh, just be
careful that you don't snort milk out your nose!

NEWS YOU CAN USE |
|
Tune In
As serious writers and researchers, we are always
looking for the best information from the most
authoritative Web sites. Well, okay, sometimes we
need a little diversion and a good laugh, too.
YouTube
and the other popular video-sharing Web sites can
provide just such a diversion. Where else can you
watch the latest Diet Coke/Mentos trick, see
upcoming movie trailers, view music videos of
questionable quality and tune in to real-life soap
operas?
Apparently we’re not the only ones watching.
According to Nielsen/NetRatings, nearly 20 million
viewers log on to YouTube each month. And the
British newspaper, The Observer, recently
included YouTube as number 4 in the list of top 15 Web sites that changed the
world.
Although YouTube can be very entertaining, video
sharing is not just for fun and games. New Web sites
featuring newsworthy user-submitted video, like CNN
Exchange, are making amateur video an
important new medium in journalism.

- If you start dancing in the street, everyone you
bump into will know all the steps.
- Your laptop computer can override the
communication systems of any invading aliens.
- It does not matter if you are heavily outnumbered
in a martial arts fight — your enemies will wait
patiently to attack you one at a time by dancing
around in a threatening manner until you have
knocked out their predecessors.
- No one involved in an explosion, volcanic eruption
or alien invasion will ever go into shock.
- You can always find a chainsaw when you need
one.
