You can discover more about a person in an hour of play than in a year of conversation.

If we're in each other's dreams, we can play together all night.
Bill Watterson (Calvin & Hobbes)

Work and play are words used to describe the same thing under differing conditions.
Mark Twain

Kate must have been a bit intense growing up because one of her first “keepsake” gifts her parents gave her was a Precious Moments figurine reminding her to “stop and smell the flowers.” Always thinking ahead to the next deadline, she welcomes reminders to live in the moment. Recently, she found a book called How Now, 100 Ways to Celebrate the Present Moment. We’ve provided an excerpt below that is particularly suited to this month’s invitation to play.

TRY THIS

Zen Within Reach
Now is the perfect time to take a little break from your own garden and explore some places where other green thumbs have been working. If you are looking for peace and order, then visit one of the public Japanese gardens in the Twin Cities.

NEWS YOU CAN USE

Catch a Wild Book
Have you ever seen a book left in a public area? It may be a Book Crossing book, waiting for you to read it and then release it “into the wild.” Book Crossing is a global organization dedicated to making the world a library.

It’s easy to add to the fun: Choose one of your books. Register it online (you’ll receive an ID number). Then set the book free and track its journey online.

Kate recently found Stephen King’s The Green Mile on a bench in White Bear Lake. Believe it or not, she’d planned to read that book that very week. According to the Book Crossing Web site, the book was released for the first time on the bench. It’s now traveling in Cologne, Germany.

WORDWISE

Look to the Past to Live in the Now
Here is an excerpt from How Now, 100 Ways to Celebrate the Present Moment by Raphael Cushnir.

Toy Time
"Remember the Slinky? Pick-Up Sticks? Jacks? Legos? The toys you loved the most as a child provided countless hours of enraptured contentment. Until the call came for dinner or bedtime, you wanted nothing else but to be where you were, doing exactly what you were doing. The good news is that no matter how many years have passed, those favorite toys can still work their very same magic."

The passage then entreats you to take a trip to the store, stock up and play ... with no thought to clocks, distractions and to-do lists. (Note for Gen Xers and younger: feel free to substitute Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Barbie and other age-appropriate pastimes.)

Anyone for a game of Mousetrap?
