Be not afraid of growing slowly; be afraid only of standing still.
Chinese Proverb

If every day is an awakening, you will never grow old. You will just keep growing.
Gail Sheehy

If you have a garden and a library, you have everything you need.
Marcus Tullius Cicero

Grow is an obvious theme considering the bursting of buds and unfurling of leaves that abound outdoors. Wouldn’t it be wild if you could see professional development so visually? For example, when Maiya and Christina return from their national conference on e-mail marketing this week, they could have sprouted new limbs – all the better to quickly implement everything they’ve learned. Or, when Melissa and Maiya attend the Marketing to Women conference the first week in May, their heads literally could be blooming with new ideas to engage the many segments that make up the female purchasing powerhouse.

Want the highlights of what we’ve learned at these two conferences? Just let us know. We’re happy to graft a few new branches on your own tree of knowledge.

We Love Our Book Groups
Book clubs or reading groups are more popular than ever, especially among women. And it’s not just the Oprah crowd, either. “I’ve been getting together with my book group every month for 12 years now,” says High Point’s Creative Director, Maiya Willits. “It’s about so much more than what we read – it’s about how we connect. We’ve been through it all together – marriages, kids, cancer, you name it.” In a recent article in the Seattle Times, Elizabeth Long, author of Women and Uses of Reading in Everyday Life, suggests that women use book club discussions “as a lens to consider issues in their lives” and a legitimate way to gather, away from the demands of work and family. Maiya hopes her group will be connecting for years to come. She has a good model: Her mother’s book club in Michigan has been together for more than 40 years!

NEWS YOU CAN USE

Make Mine a Human
Keep this list handy when navigating the world of interactive voice response systems (IVRs). The GetHuman Database tells you exactly how to bypass the system to get to an actual person. We haven’t tested them all, but the ones we did sure work!

HOT POINT

Our Growing Population
Those in the know (as much as they can be with something like this) estimate the 300 millionth American will be born around October – certainly by the end of the year.

The Census Bureau estimates that with a baby being born every 8 seconds, someone dying every 12 seconds and the nation gaining an immigrant every 31 seconds on average, the population is growing by one person every 14 seconds.

WORDWISE

RSS Feeds
Have you noticed links to RSS feeds showing up on news Web sites and blogs? RSS or Really Simple Syndication is a useful tool for staying current with your favorite Web sites. RSS uses XML code that constantly checks the content of a site and then broadcasts updates to anyone who subscribes to a feed.

To access RSS feeds, you will need a feed aggregator – software that checks the feeds to which you subscribe. Fortunately, you have many free, Web-based options for subscribing to feeds. If you use the Firefox browser, you can simply save the feed URL as a “New Live Bookmark.” When you mouse over that bookmark in your list, you’ll see all the headlines and you can click any one to go to the actual story. If you use a personalized Google homepage or MyYahoo! page, then you probably already have RSS news feeds right there showing you the latest news. You can also try Google Reader to track your favorite feeds.

HIGH POINT HIGHLIGHTS

Center for Reproductive Medicine
This leading Minnesota clinic wanted gynecologists to be able to easily refer patients interested in seeking treatment for infertility. The challenge was to develop a brochure that educates patients about their options while respecting the sensitive and often emotional nature of this issue. High Point Creative wrote the copy and worked with art directors at Zimmer/Madich to create a compelling message about advanced reproductive care options. See the full brochure (PDF).

American Medical Systems
High Point had the pleasure of helping American Medical Systems (AMS) and the Larsen design team create the AMS 2005 Annual Report. We provided all the writing, which included interviewing company executives for their perspectives on the year, physicians for their insights on the products and patients for their struggles and triumphs on their conditions.

The annual report depicts just how common pelvic health conditions are and just how few people seek treatment. But thanks to AMS, more people are taking back their lives to live fully.
