January 2006

Beauty is not in the face; beauty is a light in the heart.
Kahlil Gibran

An age is called “dark,” not because the light fails to shine but because people refuse to see it.
James Michener

We cannot hold a torch to light another's path without brightening our own.
Ben Sweetland

After days of cloudy skies, the sun is now shining bright. Working creatively is a lot like believing that the sun will shine again — even on the cloudiest days. The blank page. The deadline. The voice in your head questioning whether you really have it in you this time to come through. Then you dig in and there it is. That ray of inspiration that leads you to the bright idea. What a great feeling. Shine on.

TRY THIS

Japanese Manga Comics
Japanese culture has created a new shining star in the publishing industry. It’s manga, or Japanese-style comics (pronounced “mahn-guh” with a hard g). Check your local bookstore and you will find shelves and shelves of manga titles. In the magazine section, you can pick up a copy of Shonen Jump or Shojo Beat, serialized monthly comics aimed at boys and girls respectively. Still not sure? This month, several major North American newspapers, including the Los Angeles Times and Vancouver Sun, are premiering two manga comic strips in an effort to attract younger readers. The strips, Van Von Hunter and Peach Fuzz look Japanese but are actually made by Americans. The manga influence is spreading, bringing a whole new world of action, romance and fun to readers of all ages.

NEWS YOU CAN USE

Podcasts
We’ve long been excited about audible.com's downloadable content (audio books, radio programs, newspaper subscriptions, etc.) but recently got hooked on podcasts as a great way to populate our iPods and hard drives with interesting news, information and entertainment content. It’s a great way to keep up with trends and keep those creative ideas coming.

A podcast is a Web feed of audio or video files that anyone can subscribe to. A simple way to access a variety of popular podcasts is through Apple’s iTunes Music Store, which offers shows from National Public Radio (NPR), CNN, ESPN and more – all free. In fact, many shows that you have to pay for on audible.com are available for free as podcasts. And once you subscribe, all future episodes are automatically delivered to your iTunes podcast playlist. Some High Point favorites include SETI Science and Skepticism, NPR: Story of the Day and Slate Explainer.
