Change your thoughts and you change your world.
- Norman Vincent Peale

When you're finished changing, you're finished.
- Ben Franklin

Life is change. Growth is optional. Choose wisely.
- Karen Kaiser Clark

Do one thing every day that scares you. As mottos go, that can be a tough one to follow. But by pushing yourself — even a little — every day, you stretch your comfort zone and open yourself to change. Right now, as the leaves are changing, we have a vivid reminder that nothing stays the same. So the more we challenge ourselves to see something new, to read something new, to do something new...we are renewed. Sure it’s scary, but it’s a “good” scary.

Grammar Tip: Effective Word Choice

Affect and effect are two nearly identical words that have different and multiple meanings — no wonder their use is often confused! Here is a quick guide to the proper use of affect and effect.

Affect can be used as a verb, meaning “to influence, change, assume.” Avoid using affect as a noun. Effect can be used as a verb meaning “to bring about,” or as a noun meaning “result, impression.”

For example:

  1. Your comment will not affect (change) the outcome.
  2. She affects (assumes) an unsophisticated manner.
  3. It is essential that we effect (bring about) an immediate improvement in sales.
  4. It will be months before we can assess the full effect (result) of the new law.

WORDWISE

Urban Dictionary

Have you recently heard a new word from a teenager or a friend and wondered, “what does that mean?” Urban Dictionary may provide just the clue you need. The site claims to be “a living catalog of human interaction and popular culture created by hundreds of thousands of people, and read by millions.” Urban Dictionary works a little like Wikipedia — visitors can add new words and even rate definitions with a thumbs up or a thumbs down.

One word of caution: Urban Dictionary can be raw and shocking due to slang and other unflattering content. But for the intrepid, it’s an amazing resource for the latest language developments. On the “browse” tab, click “random” to get a surprise. Check the “newest” tab to review today’s additions or click “daily email” to receive the Urban Word of the Day.
