As writers, we’re always learning about our clients' products, their customers’ desires and new ways to capture and keep a reader’s attention. But it’s in September, as kids trudge back to school, that the challenges and rewards of learning are truly top of mind.

"Learn" is our theme for our first newsletter. We offer you a few things we’ve learned lately. And we invite you tell us what you think about this new way of staying connected with High Point Creative.

NEWS YOU CAN USE

Book Review: Whole New Mind

In late summer, the High Point team started reading Daniel Pink’s new book, A Whole New Mind: Moving from the Information Age to the Conceptual Age. His latest effort explores how three forces— Abundance, Asia and Automation—are pushing us into a new era where artistic and holistic “right brain” abilities will rule.

The writing is friendly and accessible, which makes the book a fast and easy read. The best part is that Pink moves beyond exposition and theory. The second half of the book focuses on six senses (design, story, symphony, empathy, play and meaning) and offers resources and ideas on how you can explore and sharpen these senses to get ahead in the Conceptual Age.

WORDWISE

Wikipedia

If you’re looking for interesting news or information, or if you have information you’d like to share with the world at large, you may want to check out Wikipedia. A wiki (from the Hawaiian wiki wiki, meaning quick) is a collaborative website that comprises the collective work of many authors. Wikipedia is an online, multi-language, free-content encyclopedia written collaboratively by volunteers. Anyone is free to edit the content of Wikipedia. Volunteer editors work to counter systemic bias, check facts and references, fix punctuation, and improve grammar.

Although Wikipedia’s use as a reference is controversial, its popularity is undisputed. Wikipedia contains approximately 1.6 million articles (more than 700,000 in English), and is the second most visited reference site on the web after doctionary.com. Wikipedia’s ambitious goal is to provide free knowledge to every person in the world.
