Greetings!
I don't know about you, but I have been busier than
a one-armed wallpaper hanger. I'm sure you are as
well. I hope that you will make room in your busy
life to join us in our fun and educational events.
Please see articles below for upcoming events that
you should not miss.
SWSA is an all volunteer organization. We could use
your time and expertise. I do many of the tasks
that someone else could do better than I. If
you have time for clerical tasks (picking up mail,
making deposits, mailing new member packets, sorting
and filing papers), if you have computer apptitude
(website, newsletter), if you like to write
(product, book or movie reviews for Gybe Talk), if
you have something educational to share (like Wayne
Espy has been) or if you just have some creative
ideas, please contact me
(swsaseattle@yahoo.com). If I am a little slow in
responding, just picture the one-armed wallpaper
hanger. Thanks for your support of SWSA!

Thank You Port Madison Yacht Club!
A big thanks to the Port Madison Yacht Club for
allowing us to use their charming facility! SWSA
members look forward to our trip there every year. As
expected, we had a spectacular time. Also, a big
thank you to Neal Jackson, Cruise Committee, for
organizing the sail. And a thank you to Gil for
recording the event for all time in pictures and for
only taking pictures of me with mouth full or my
eyes closed. Check out www.swsa.com for more

News from SeaStars
Sea Stars, a sailing and leadership program that
started at SWSA in 1997, has recently partnered with
Sail Sand Point and Girl Scouts ? effectively ending
its 8 year association with the Boy Scouts of America.
Although our members bid a sad farewell to Jadah,
our main vessel since 2000, we are pleased to be
sailing Madeline, an O?Day 19, and we?ll be able to
add dinghy sailing to our program. In a short while
we will have Marcy, a Catalina 22, available to us
as well. Sail Sand Point has also generously
offered us storage and meeting space. We will meet
at Sail Sand Point through the summer and into
October. After that we will meet as we have been at
the Center for Wooden Boats. We continue to meet
Sunday afternoons at 1 pm.
Our Girl Scout partnership will allow us to reach
younger girls ? they can be as young as 11 to join
the crew. We are currently working on programming
geared to this age group, as well as serving the
older teens. We were attracted to the Girl Scout
approach stated in their motto: ?By Girls, For
Girls, ? and to their inclusive membership policy as
well.
We hope to revive a Girl Scout program that
disappeared in the Pacific Northwest in 1974:
Mariner Scouting, the Girl Scout equivalent of Sea
Scouts. It is very much alive in many parts of the
country, especially in California, Texas, and on the
east coast, with its own traditions and advancement
program. Mariner Scouting is not currently
recognized by the national council of the Girl
Scouts, but preliminary contacts indicate that there
is some interest in the program. Our troop falls
under the Girl Scout?s ?Studio 2B? program.
Our name will change slightly to M.S.S. Sea Stars,
to reflect the change from Sea Scouting to Mariner
Scouting. We will take part in about 4 Sea Scout
events per year, for socialization and challenge, as
well as community service and Girl Scout events.
Our calendar is filling up fast!

3-Day Womens Challenge
benefit the Tall Ship Semester for Girls program
Always wanted to learn to sail but never have? Sign
up today for the Tall Ship 3-day Womens Challenge,
an adventure voyage for women that explores ocean
sailing on and beyond San Francisco Bay . Proceeds
from the 3-day Womens Challenge benefit the Tall
Ship Semester for Girls program.
The Womens Challenge is limited to 12 participants and
runs aboard the Schooner Seaward. Proceeds from the
3-day Challenge benefit the Tall Ship Semester for Girls
program. Become part of a small crew of women that
works side-by-side to learn the skills to sail a
large schooner on the Bay and along the Northern
California coast. No sailing experience is necessary
just a willingness to expand your horizons. As a
group, your success will depend not only on what you
as an
individual learn about sailing but on the strength
of your groups ability to work together as a team.
As part of the womens challenge you will:
Stretch yourself to raise money and
awareness for a life-changing program for teenage
girls.
Step outside your everyday life and come
aboard with eleven strangers, live in close quarters
and see what you learn about yourself!
Regardless what role you play in your
professional or personal life you will be asked to
step into many different roles and stretch yourself
from leader to follower to team player.
Challenge yourself personally and learn
unique sailing skills that will make all your
friends envious!
You may come aboard strangers, but through shared
experience, you end the voyage as true shipmates.
We've had women from Seattle to Alaska to LA to
Virginia come aboard Seaward for the 3-day womens
challenge so you don't need to be local to participate!
Womens Challenge 4 - August 23 - 26, 2006
Womens Challenge 5 October 22 - 25, 2006
The Women's Challenge exceeded my expectations. I
learned so much from knots to sails to lines to
terms. I can't wait to tell everyone I know about
this and encourage their participation. This was
AWESOME! - Jennifer
Fundraising: Participants are required to fundraise
a minimum of $1,200 in order to support TSEAs
signature program, the Tall Ship Semester for Girls.
You'll have the expertise of the 3-day Fundraising
Coordinator to help you meet your goal.
Deadlines: Participants must have fundraised or
paid 50% of the minimum amount one month before the
voyage. If 50% has not been collected you will be
responsible for making a deposit to reach that
amount. The remainder of the funds must be received
by TSEA by one month after the end of the voyage.
Cancellation Policy: Life happens and we understand
that. If you must cancel within 30 days of the sail
and you are able to fill your space with a friend,
we will apply your fundraising efforts to the next
Challenge in which you are able to enroll. If you
are not able to fill your space your dollars raised
and deposit will be forfeited. If you cancel with
more than 30 days
notice, we will apply any fundraising efforts to the
next Challenge in which you are able to enroll
within a year.

Boats Afloat / Sailfest Northwest
Need volunteers for September show
Boats Afloat together with Sailfest Northwest is the
largest boat show on the west coast. SWSA has been
invited to have a table in the education tent. This
is a great opportunity for public exposure amongst
the boating community. We need to staff the table
from Wednesday, September 13th to Sunday, September
17th. This is a good opportunity to recruit new
members and maybe even some fundraising. Please
email swsaseattle@yahoo.com to indicate your
interest in helping promote SWSA! Your time and
enthusiasm is greatly appreciated.

San Juan sailor (non-member) looking for crew
August
I usually keep my boat in Kenmore WA, but am sailing
the San Juan
islands until September 1st.
Although I single-hand frequently, it would be fun
to have some crew.
Would your members be interested in crewing during
the month of
August? I'm around Friday Harbor most often next
month, so there is
easy ferry access.
My boat is a 50-foot Ketch. She's a Gulfstar built
in 1980 with has
two cabins and a large saloon. The center-cockpit is
enclosed, so if
there is a lot of interest, some adventurous souls
could even sleep
there.
Crew should bring their own food/beverages, sleeping
bags, clothing
and towels, and help sail her and keep her tidy.
You can tell by my name that I'm male, and yes I'm
single too. I
mention this in case it disallows my participation.
Photos of the boat are here:
http://pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/neal0117/my_photos
My recent sailing blog is here:
http://www.sailblogs.com/member/seaquell/
My details are here:
http://tinyurl.com/mmw5h
If you're interested, send email. Later we can
discuss details by
phone.
-Neal.
