Miami Sierra Club member Bruno Barreiro votes AGAINST THE ENVIRONMENT

Miami-Dade County Commissioner Bruno Barreiro Votes against the environment by showing support for Florida City Annexation outside the Urban Development Boundary Line. This area bordering the Everglades National park and Biscayne Bay has been identified by county officials as environmentally sensitive land. Will this fellow Miami-Dade Sierra Club member show that he has come to his senses and change his vote to Mayor Alvarez's position to HOLD THE LINE?

The environment is not a partisan issue. Mayor Alvarez is not some left leaning democrat. His authorized beat down on liberal demonstrators during the FTAA conference can attest to that. He realizes that Miamians exist in a precarious ecological balance. We all want a high quality of life.

That is why I am so troubled by my county commissioner's recent vote in favor of Florida City Annexation. He ignored the wishes of his own constituency in favor of sprawl development. One of the main municipalities in his district (MIAMI BEACH) handed him a unanimous resolution denouncing any potential expansion of the Urban Development boundary.

I am not against development. I hope to see the day when growth is PLANNED along a transportation system that can handle the influx of new residents. I long for the day when all Miami Dade citizens don't have their public waterfront parks sold to private land interests. I long for balance.

Our public lands are like Roth- IRA's. We should not be cashing them in for short-term frivolous desires. How many of you would cash in your IRA for a plasma T.V. or expensive car?

The honorable commissioner should change his vote to "HOLD the line" when county commissioners reconvene to challenge mayor Alvarez's veto.

Other Miami-Dade Comissioners that voted against the environment include: Dennis Moss, Dorrin Rolle, Natacha Seijas, Jose "Pepe" Diaz, Joe A. MArtinez, Barbara Jordan

The Miami Sierra Club wants to thank Miami-Dade County Commisioners Sorenson, Gimenez, Sosa, Heyman, Carey-Shuler, and Mayor Alvarez for HOLDING THE LINE!!!

  • WASHINGTON Bill Threatens Everglades restoration!

Congressman Don Young from Alaska has inserted language into the H.R. 2864 House Water Resources Development Act (WRDA) bill to kill the Everglades Skyway and ruin Everglades restoration efforts.

The bill language specifies a deadline of August 31st, 2005 for any plans to elevate Tamiami Trail. This expedited time table would not give planners and the public time to propose the best project for everglades restoration.

It seems rather odd that the federal governemnt is trying to mandate Everglades Restoration against the will of the local citizens, and governmental advisory Metropolitan Planning Organzation groups (CTAC).

Maybe the next plan for the congressman from Alaska is to gearing up to propose Oil exploration in the keys.??? Kind of gives Stiltsville an entirely different meaning......

  • Lawsuits filed for the Environment
  • Underground Storage Wells ----- The Sierra Club has filed a federal Safe Drinking Water Act lawsuit to prevent treated sewage from being discharged into and contaminating drinking water supplies in Florida. The suit was filed against the Florida Department of Environmental Protection. For over a decade, the state has failed to comply with the Safe Drinking Water Act and as a result Miami-Dade County's daily injections of 112.5 million gallons of treated sewage underground are migrating up into drinking water aquifers.
