Tamiami Trail Modernization- CTAC chooses the Skyway

Miami-dade County Citizens Transportation Advisory Committee (CTAC) overwhelmingly passed Resolution #6-05 for the Skyway option of the modernization of Tamiami Trail on Wednesday 4- 27-05.

This project is crucial to the preservation of the Everglades. Tamiami Trail acts like a dam blocking the historic flow of water through degraded Shark River Slough. Jonathan Ullman's presented these reasons for the Skyway:

"It is cheaper to Build the 100 Percent state/federally funded Skyway now than increased road maintenance with other options later."

"The view from the Skyway would provide a signature project for everglades restoration."

"The Scientific Community in this past January's Naples, Fl Everglades Restoration Conference overwhelming support the Skyway option."

"The current road is placed on a compressible moveable muck layer that will be unstable and unsafe with the addition of more asphalt on Tamiami Trail."

Now that CTAC has taken action on the largest ecosystem restoration project on the planet, will the Mayor, County Commissioners and MPO (Metropolitan Planning Organization) express preference for the 11 mile Skyway to the Army Corps of Engineers?

  • Our May Speaker was Jonatha n.Ullman@sierraclub.org who discussed " The Tamiami Skyway Project- "Let the Water Flow.. This is project is CRUCIAL for Everglades Restoration. Jonathan outlined the key issues of why the Skyway will contribute to the best possible Everglades. Restoration.

Our June Presentation will be a screening of "The End of Suburbia". As we enter the 21st century, serious questions are beginning to emerge about the sustainability of this way of life. With brutal honesty and a touch of irony, The End of Suburbia explores the American Way of Life and its prospects as the planet approaches a critical era, as global demand for fossil fuels begins to outstrip supply. World Oil Peak and the inevitable decline of fossil fuels are upon us now, some scientists and policy makers argue in this documentary.

. . . . . . . The May 17th concerning the proposed dissolution of the UDB line was meeting was suspiciously postponed at the last minute for the second time by county officials.....

County Planners, School officials, Mayor Alvarez, Environmentalists, Business Leaders, Mortgage Brokers and local Municipality elected leaders all have expressed outrage at the thought of the proposed movement of the UDB-line.

It is no secret that our county lacks the infrastructure to support the additional development. Roads, Schools, and Sewer systems are running over capactiy in the proposed area. Additional developement will compound the issue.

Development in the area will act like a traffic plug clogging Monroe County Hurricane evacuations and alter the paradise image of the Florida Key's tourism industry to just another clogged, sprawled suburb.

Moving the UDB line will hinder Everglades Restoration efforts by decreasing the everglades buffer zone. Broward County's Weston should not be our modus operandi.

Citizens need to attend the upcoming county commissioner meeting to voice the anthem "HOLD THE LINE". .

We will need to get as many people in the county commision chambers as possible to let our elected officials know that this community wants smart growth that is in harmony with current infrastructure (schools, roads, transit, sewers,) and everglades restoration concerns.

A special alert will be sent out to subscribers when we know the date/time.

  • Lawsuits filed for the Environment
  • Underground Storage Wells ----- The Sierra Club has filed a federal Safe Drinking Water Act lawsuit to prevent treated sewage from being discharged into and contaminating drinking water supplies in Florida. The suit was filed against the Florida Department of Environmental Protection. For over a decade, the state has failed to comply with the Safe Drinking Water Act and as a result Miami-Dade County's daily injections of 112.5 million gallons of treated sewage underground are migrating up into drinking water aquifers.
