What's New...
Massage and Bodywork CentersAs we make our way into summer, there's a lot going on at Massage and Bodywork Centers.

July 13-15 we are offering an intensive Usui A.R.T. (Advanced ReikiTraining) and
Master/Teacher class right at the center.

This training will teach you the art of Reiki, a Japanese technique that can help you relax more deeply, sleep more peacefully and raise your energy level. As a "tool," it can assist you in countless ways as you learn to access your own energy to empower yourself. You will increase your self awareness and ability to focus and bring a feeling of new balance into your life.

The class will run Friday 7-9:30 pm and both Saturday and Sunday 10 am - 5:30 pm. The cost is $325 ($100 deposit required).  Please register at least seven days prior by calling 610-367-1919.  But hurry, class size is limited.

We're also excited to announce that Massage and Bodywork Centers is now offering hot stone therapy and prenatal massage.  We also have regular appointments available every third Sunday of each month.

We offer gift certificates for birthdays, weddings, graduations, any occasion you're looking for something special.  Please call ahead to arrange for pickup of a gift certificate.

And finally, we wanted to take this opportunity to introduce you to our therapeutic massage and reflexology for today's active Tots, Tweens, and Teens.  Research has shown the benefits of therapy for these age groups include the relief of PMS, social stress, anxiety, depression, ADD/ADHD, and more.  We offer special rates and fully clothed massages for children (guardian must be present during session).
massage roomStay-cations

According to the 2008 edition of AAA's Annual Vacation Costs Survey the average cost of a North American vacation for two adults is $244 per day for lodging and meals (That's $1,708 for a week.). Add in the cost of airfare or the cost of travelling by car (with gas over $3.00 a gallon) and a couple of kids, and you're looking at several thousand dollars for a one-week vacation.

With the economy what it is today, many of us are forgoing the annual family vacation to a far off destination or even the Jersey Shore. But that doesn't mean that you can't still enjoy a great vacation with the family. More and more people are enjoying the benefits of a stay-cation.

During a stay-cation the family stays home, visits local attractions, eats out, and just relaxes. Stay-cations save lots of money, don't have the stress that goes along with traveling (like packing, airport procedures, and long drives), and put money back into our local economy.

I think the keys to an enjoyable stay-cation include:

  • NOT going to work
  • Doing what you want to do rather than what you should do
  • Avoiding routine
  • Adding little indulgences
  • Creating the feel of a vacation

Now, what could feel less routine and more like a pampering vacation than a daily massage? You could take half the money you would normally spend on a typical vacation - conservatively, let's say $1000 for a family of four - and get a treatment almost every day at Massage and Body Centers for the entire family.

Some treatments your family may want to try include the Lomi Lomi Hawaiian Massage, which helps release both physical and emotional blocks; a hot stone massage that uses heat to help you relax more deeply and warm up tight muscles; or reflexology, which applies pressure to the thousands of nerve endings in the feet, stimulating every organ, gland, and part of the body.

We also offer simultaneous couples massage. Although you aren't in the same room together, you can each enjoy the benefits of a massage simultaneously. And we have our special Massage and Reflexology for Tots, Tweens, and Teens that helps relieve social stress, computer neck crick, exhaustion, and even texting thumbs.

If you decide to try a stay-cation this year, give us a call, and we'll put together a customized plan for your family. Add a trip to Daniel Boone Homestead or Hershey Park, a couple of special dinners, and you have a Stay-cation you'll remember for years.

Hydration water cooler

Ever wonder why we always urge you to drink lots of water after a massage?

The importance of water to your overall well-being can't be stressed enough. A lack of hydration can cause all kinds of discomforts - from headaches to hunger and fatigue and possibly even muscle cramps.

"Your body can go without food for about a month; however, it cannot go without water for more than eight to 14 days, depending upon the person- water is essential for sustaining life," according to an article by Mary Beth Brau.(AMTA Article)

And since muscles are made up of 70% water, they need to be well hydrated in order to work efficiently. Without enough water, your muscles are not getting enough electrolytes, which help muscles contract and relax. Dehydration reduces muscle strength and control, which can cause strain and possibly painful muscle cramps.

So, why do we specifically emphasize drinking water after a massage? First, as we manipulate your muscles, materials such as salt and minerals are released. Drinking water helps flush out these waste materials; otherwise they can build up, causing muscle aches and soreness after a massage.

Second, massages can be dehydrating. We recommend drinking water after a massage for the same reason you should drink lots of water after exercise. When muscles are worked, they lose water and electrolytes. Drinking water will rehydrate your muscles and reduce the potential for muscle aches and pains in the days following a massage.

Drinking water before a massage is also a good idea. It makes it easier for your massage therapist to perform deep work. Hydrated muscles are easier to manipulate.

In addition, drinking water adds muscle weight, allowing the muscle to work more efficiently, which in turn burns fat. Who wouldn't mind burning a little more fat?!

Don't fool yourself into thinking there's enough water in the coffee or juice that you drink. Coffee contains caffeine, which is a diuretic, and diuretics do the opposite of hydrating you. Juices contain sugar. And we won't even talk about what's in soda; I wouldn't even know how to spell most of those ingredients ;-). Nothing can replace the benefits of water - straight up.

So, drink up!

If you don't like the taste of water from your tap and don't like the idea of a recycling a million plastic bottles, consider installing a water conditioning system, which removes nasty tastes and odors, leaving you with clean, refreshing water right from your own tap.

And, I just happen to know a great master plumber who can help you out - my husband. Call Joe Paschall at Patriot Mechanical and Plumbing at 610-473-0620. Tell him I sent you; maybe I'll score some brownie points.

It's time to nurture your body, mind, and spirit.

Warmly,

Dorothy Paschall
