MJYF Celebrates 20 Years!!!

Happy New Year Friends of MJYF!
As we celebrate the beginning of a new year, 2012 also commemorates the 20th anniversary of the Maynard Jackson Youth Foundation. Since the organization was founded in 1992 by Maynard Holbrook Jackson, MJYF has believed in the power of leadership in helping our young people succeed. Throughout the last 20 years, we have upheld that belief and our mission of building a "foundation for the future."
We have many activities planned to celebrate our 20th anniversary including the MJYF Legacy Gala that will be held later this year - see more information at the end of this newsletter. We will keep you abreast of all our activities and ways you can contribute and join in on the celebration.
While Maynard is no longer here physically, his legacy continues to live on through the work of MJYF, our Board, staff, volunteers, students, and supporters like you. We thank you for all of your support and look forward to not only a great year this year, but the next 20 years and beyond.
Sincerely,
Virgil Murray, Executive Director |

"The People's Mayor": MJYF Students
Visit AUC Exhibit to Learn More About
Maynard Jackson

On Saturday, November 19, 2011, the MJYF Leadership Academy students held class at the Atlanta University Center's Woodruff Library to experience an exhibit on Maynard Holbrook Jackson. The exhibit, "The People's Mayor: Maynard Jackson and the Politics of Transformation", offers visitors an engaging journey through both biographical and historical highlights of Jackson's life and mayoral career.
The students were led through the exhibit by Andrea Jackson, an archivist at Woodruff Library. Items on display at the exhibit included artifacts and memorabilia from the expansion of Hartsfield Atlanta International Airport (now Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport), video footage of Jackson, campaign items, a 1988 Olympic Torch presented to Jackson, and Jackson's family photos.
Andrea Jackson answered questions from the students and discussed the importance of archives and history. She shared other documents such as slave records with the students and encouraged each of them to begin collecting photos and other items that will help tell the stories of their own history. The students left with not only more knowledge about Maynard, but they also learned the importance of documenting events and career opportunities in the field of history. |
Celebrating 20 Years...
The Impact of MJYF: Leadership Academy Graduates Share Their Stories
BEYOND THE BORDERS... SEEING THE WORLD FIRSTHAND
by Tyson Shepherd (Leadership Academy Class of 2008)
Though the time may seem so very far and away now, I will never forget the Maynard Jackson Youth Foundation and the profound impact the program has had on my life. Through the MJYF Leadership Academy, I learned to be more assertive as an individual and more passionate regarding my ideals. More importantly, I learned what it means for like-minded individuals such as the staff and volunteers, to encourage youth and uplift them so that they can move towards a brighter future. I am proud to say that I am the byproduct of such a philosophy.
The many life lessons that were taught to me and the other Dynasty Fellows every other Saturday have contributed tremendously to the opportunities I have been awarded and have taken advantage of since that time in my life. One such opportunity that I am most grateful for is the chance to study abroad through my school, College of the Holy Cross. I am currently studying in Ireland at the University College Cork. Even years after graduating from the MJYF Leadership Academy, I found that I could always turn to them for help. In fact, MJYF helped offset some of the costs of my excursion abroad. Because of that, I can honestly say that without the assistance of MJYF, I might not have been able to enjoy my study abroad experience despite how hard I worked to earn such an opportunity.
Before participating in the MJYF program, I must admit that I was very much opposed to the idea of breaking away from my comfort zone. For me, leaving the country was not an option let alone an idea. But I was taught that in order to achieve success, one must be willing to adapt and imagine beyond the borders they have set for themselves. Through this, one can attain greatness. It is this idea that resonated with me the most. I believe that I am on the path to doing great things, and if MJYF is as strong a force now as it was then - of which I am certain to be true - then those who will come to the program in the future will have no trouble evolving as individuals and being put on their own paths towards greatness.
A SPLIT SECOND DECISION... PUTTING LEADERSHIP TO THE TEST
by David Whatley (Leadership Academy Class of 2010)
On a somber night in December 2009, I experienced the culmination of a very tumultuous moment in my life. I was experiencing turmoil within my family, school and relationships with others. My father was terribly ill, my grades were not the best, and I just did not have anyone to turn to. The stress from all these things led to strong suicidal thoughts, which I nearly carried out on that December evening. Right before I took my own life, I thought about my family, friends, and all who had impacted my life. I realized that everything I needed was already here and thus, I didn't go through with it.
Since then, I have prospered from that terrible moment in my life in a myriad of ways. The ethical and moral leadership skills I learned from MJYF helped me become the person I am today - the person whose life could have been changed in an instant. I used the skills I learned in MJYF to become a State Officer for the Georgia Technology Student Association in March 2010. In September 2010, I learned that MJYF nominated me for the Posse Scholarship, a full-tuition, leadership-merit scholarship. After three months and countless hours of intense interviews, I became one of 10 students accepted to Boston University on the scholarship. In September 2011, my leadership skills were called upon again as I competed against six other applicants for the position of vice president of my residence hall association, which represents over 1700 students at Boston University. I won and as VP, I assist in public relations for my dorm and represent my fellow hallmates in BU's student government.
I share this story - my story - to remind myself that patience, perseverance, and leadership will lead anyone to better days regardless of the adversities you may face. I hope the readers of this piece will think and do the same. |
ALUMNI ACCOLADES
Four MJYF Class of 2011 Graduates Selected as Posse Scholars!
(From Left: Dominic Stegall, Makalani Mack, Elmer Moreno, and Montanez Baugh)
The Maynard Jackson Youth Foundation is proud to announce that four of our graduates in the 2011 Leadership Academy class were recently selected as Posse Scholars by the Posse Foundation. Posse is one of the most comprehensive and renowned college access and youth leadership development programs in the United States.
According to Posse's website, the concept of a Posse works for both students and college campuses and is rooted in the belief that a small, diverse group of talented students - a Posse - carefully selected and trained, can serve as a catalyst for increased individual and community development.
Below are some quotes from the graduates about their Posse and MJYF experiences:
Montanez Baugh (Maynard Jackson High School): "The Maynard Jackson Youth Foundation Leadership Academy offered me information, resources, and opportunities that played a vital role in my experience as a Posse Scholar. Every meeting offered tips and pointers that developed wonderful leadership skills that enabled me to step up to the demands required in each Posse interview. I was able to maximize my potential as a leader, be self-motivated and resourceful, and express myself through my actions and writings. I'm proud to say I will be attending Bard College in upstate New York. I intend to major in Biology."
Makalani Mack (Carver School of the Arts): "So far I've become even more excited to be a Posse scholar. When my family came up from Florida for the holidays, I became overjoyed to see just how much it affects them and how proud they are of me. I will be attending Brandeis University in Waltham, MA, ranked number 31 in the country - it is the top ranked Posse Atlanta school. I am the first [in my family] to go to a school of this caliber. The kind of feedback I've gotten from relatives, friends, teachers and others has impacted and encouraged me to want to go even further. MJYF taught me great interview skills and also leadership - which helped with my Posse process. The Kiwanis Key Leader retreat we attended with MJYF also taught me how to better interact with different groups of people."
Elmer Moreno (Mays High School): "Posse is a great support program for college. Most senior high school students go through a lonely process when transitioning to college. I will have a support family consisting of the Atlanta Posse Foundation team and eleven other scholars who will be attending Syracuse University in the Fall of 2012. I plan to major in either Engineering or Business Management. The Maynard Jackson Youth Foundation (MJYF) has played an important process in my Posse experience and in my life as well. Posse is a leadership-based scholarship. When going through the recruitment rounds, I used much of the knowledge that MJYF provided me through its diverse and unique leadership sessions. From MJYF, I learned many lessons, but personally one I will never forget is that "leadership is a process, not a position."
Dominic Stegall (Mays High School): "I will be attending Bard College in Annondale-on-Hudson, New York. I will be studying Economics and Finance. MJYF played a huge role in me being successful with Posse simply because it taught me to interact with others. One of the main characteristics that helped me get Posse was being an outgoing person - MJYF really brought that out in me. With the trip to D.C I learned to really talk and socialize with others. I would simply like to thank Ms. Jemia and Mr. Murray for all their time and giving me the opportunity of becoming an MJYF Scholar."
Congratulations MJYF Fellows/Posse Scholars on your success!!!

The Maynard Jackson Youth Foundation was
founded in 1992 by the late Mayor Maynard H. Jackson. The purpose and mission of MJYF is to build the foundation for youth today to become leaders of tomorrow.
The signature program of MJYF is the LEADERSHIP
ACADEMY - a two-year fellowship program. Over the course of their junior and senior years in high school, the Leadership Academy develops and teaches leadership skills and principles to metro Atlanta high schoolstudents by focusing on the areas of:
Leadership;
Critical Thinking;
Entrepreneurship;
Public Service and Civic Engagement; and
College and Career Readiness

Since 1992, the Leadership Academy has trained more than 300 youth. More than 98 percent of the Leadership Academy alumni are either pursuing a post-secondary education, gainfully employed, or serving in the military. |
INVEST IN OUR
FUTURE... Donate to MJYF Today! Every generation has
both challenges and
opportunities. Those of
us living in the 21st
century see challenges all
around us: the fragile
conditions of the earth's
environment and our
global economic viability;
a nation facing the
distinct possibility that
our heirs will not live in
conditions that are
better or equal to past
generations; and where
more young black males
are in prison than in
college. In our local
schools, close to 50
percent of minority
students leave high
school without a high
school diploma, and
therefore they do not
possess the skills to
lead productive lives.
Due to Maynard Jackson's
vision, there is the
opportunity for you to
address these challenges.
Your financial
investment in the work of
the Maynard Jackson
Youth Foundation is an
investment in our future
leaders. The MJYF
Leadership Academy
program has an
indisputable track record
in positively impacting the
lives of young people.
