150th Anniversary Maryland Civil War Events
Week of September 10, 2012

Greetings!

I'm writing you about three very special Civil War events taking place this week in Maryland.

Heart of the Civil War

At 8:00 PM Tuesday, September 11th, Maryland Public Television will broadcast their original, hour-long program about the bloody clashes between Confederate and Union armies that took place in western and central Maryland during the Civil War.

MPT interviewed me for the program, asking about the stories of the civilians who got caught up in the bloody fighting in the Maryland counties of Carroll, Frederick, and Washington during September 1862. My responses were drawn from my non-fiction history book Too Afraid to Cry: Maryland Civilians in the Antietam Campaign.

Harpers Ferry and the Civil War

The National Park service has organized three days of events (Friday-Sunday) with a rich mix of activities to mark the 1862 capture of Harpers Ferry.

On Saturday, September 15th, I'll be taking part in the "Harpers Ferry 1862: Beyond the Battle" panel discussion along with Dr. Allen Guelzo; Dr. William A. Blair; Dr. James K Bryant, II; and D. Scott Hartwig. The panel runs from 1:00 to 2:30 PM and will be followed by a book signing from 2:30 to 5:00 PM. I'll be signing copies of Too Afraid to Cry as well as several of my children's historical fiction books, including The Night Riders of Harpers Ferry, and The Bravest Girl in Sharpsburg, and my new Caroline Abbott American Girl books about the War of 1812 (Harpers Ferry played a vital role in that conflict).

Antietam 150th Battle Anniversary

The National Park Service has scheduled four days of events (Friday-Monday) filled with a comprehensive list of activities to honor of the Sesquicentennial of battle that became the single bloodiest day in American history.

On Sunday, September 16th, at 2:00 PM I'll be speaking at the battlefield park about what happened to the Sharpsburg area civilians during and after the fighting. My talk will be based the research I did for Too Afraid to Cry. Afterwards I will be available to sign copies of the book.

I hope you will be able to catch the MPT program this Tuesday evening, and that we may be able to meet at Harpers Ferry this Saturday or Antietam on Sunday.

In any case, let us pause this week to reflect on the incredible sacrifices that were made one hundred fifty years ago.

Warm regards,
