Greetings!

Leading visitor tours at the Pottawatomie Lighthouse on beautiful Rock Island Wisconsin
|
I hope you are enjoying a pleasant summer! Mine has been busy--and I have news to share about an amazing wave of events coming over the next three months.
In early September I'll celebrate the official launch of Caroline Abbott, the new (and still somewhat secret) historical character that I created for American Girl. I'm looking forward to meeting lots of young readers as I help introduce Caroline on a national tour this fall!
This September also marks the 150th anniversary of the Civil War's 1862 Maryland campaign. It is an honor to have been invited to speak at commemorative events at the Antietam National Battlefield and the Harpers Ferry National Historical Park.
And in early October my third Chloe Ellefson adult mystery will be released. The Light Keeper's Legacy is mostly set on Wisconsin's Rock and Washington Islands in Lake Michigan. Can't wait to introduce readers to these very special places!

Caroline Abbott - American Girl Coming September 4th
Caroline is the new historical character Kathleen has spent the last three years secretly creating--and writing six books about--for American Girl.
Kathleen's stories about Caroline are set 200 years ago during the War of 1812. Caroline lives in the village of Sackets Harbor, New York, a port on Lake Ontario that played a vital role in the war.
American Girl has set up a nationwide author's tour for Kathleen, including a reading at the National Book Festival in Washington DC. Tour dates and locations are now up on her new website calendar. The Caroline books and details about them should be on the website by late August.

The Light Keeper's Legacy Coming October 8th
The third book in the award-winning Chloe Ellefson mystery series is at the printer's!
Chloe's on temporary loan from Old World to consult on restoring the historic 1858 Pottawatomie Lighthouse on Rock Island. Summer is over and the island, a remote, roadless state park, is nearly deserted. Roelke thinks the trip is a very bad idea, but Chloe looks forward to the solitude, and to having the lighthouse all to herself. However, Chloe soon discovers that her continued existence will depend on solving the island's mysteries, past and present.
Trade paperback copies are available for pre-order now. Electronic versions for the Kindle and Nook will arrive in late October.

Antietam 150th Anniversary America's Bloodiest Day Historians identify the Civil War battle of Antietam (Sharpsburg) Maryland as the "bloodiest day in American History." More than 23,000 soldiers were killed, wounded or missing on September 17, 1862.
Kathleen has been invited by the National Park Service to speak at events commemorating the 150th anniversary of the fighting at Antietam and nearby Harpers Ferry. She will be talking about what happened to the men, women and children who were living there when the fighting erupted. Kathleen was also interviewed for a Maryland Public TV program about these Civil War battles.
These invitations are based on Kathleen's carefully researched, non-fiction history, Too Afraid to Cry: Maryland Civilians in the Antietam Campaign, as well as two of her historical novels for young readers: and The Night Riders of Harpers Ferry.

Kathleen's New WebsiteA Comprehensive Resource
Nine months in the making, the newest www.kathleenernst.com is now online! The site was designed by Kathleen's husband Scott and built by Cedar Creek Web Design to provide a treasure-trove of information about Kathleen and her work.
The site is organized into sections for her American Girl, Civil War and Chloe Ellefson book lines, each with its own unique look.
Every one of Kathleen's (soon to be 24) books has its own page, with previews, reviews, an author's note, and links for ordering. Some include author interviews you can listen to, and/or videos to watch. Some include links to blog posts Kathleen has written about that book's themes, locations, and how it came to be written.
And every page provides one-click access to Kathleen's biography and her programs, event calendar, latest blog posts, news, contact form--and poetry. Check it out!
