The ideas on which America was founded--commitments to the rule of law, limited government and the ideals of liberty, equality and justice--are embodied in the Constitution, the oldest written constitution of any nation on Earth. Constitution Day is intended to celebrate not only the birthday of our government, but the ideas that make us Americans. Thus, it is most appropriate that students, teachers and administrators of this school founded by the Daughters of the American Revolution, observe and celebrate Constitution Week.

Jenkins Returns to Teaching Roots
Jan Price began her professional career in 1975 as the very first music teacher at KDS. She taught students in first through twelfth grades instructing choral classes, providing Dedication Day music, and producing dramas for 16 years. In 1991 she took a position at Grassy School to be nearer her home. After retiring a few years ago to care for her aging parents, Jan has now come out of retirement to return to her teaching roots at KDS as part of the Elementary Fine Arts Enrichment Program.

All three schools at KDS observed Patriot Day with flags lowered to half-staff and a moment of silence at 9:46 a.m. to honor the innocent victims who perished as a result of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.
Teachers and administrators also used the day as an opportunity to have discussions with students (as appropriate) about the significance of this important day. To most adults, it may seem as if September 11, 2001 was only yesterday; but it is likely that only a small percentage of KDS students recall the tragic day. This year's high school seniors were only 7 years old when this happened.

KDS Alumni and Missouri Daughter Visit KDS
One day while browsing in a "junk store" in Minor Hill, Tennessee, Virginia Dixon Ponder, a 1960 KDS graduate, struck up a conversation with another lady who was shopping. That lady, Pat Damewood from Poplar Bluff, Missouri, was visiting her daughter in Minor Hill, whom Virginia lives near and was acquainted with. The two became instant friends. Pat happened to mention to Virginia that she is a member of the DAR and when she learned that Virginia was a graduate of the KDS DAR School in Grant, Alabama, plans were made for a trip to the school.
