Continental Congress 2012

Hanna and Jacob

Temperatures hovered in the low 100s all week and a powerful storm damaged our nation's capital and left millions in the Washington, DC, area without power, but little could dampen the spirits of the KDS DAR School representatives attending the 121st Continental Congress of the Daughters of the American Revolution in Washington, D.C. June 25-July 1.

Friends

KDS received a nice surprise in the form of a contribution from the Friends of DAR Schools Fund during the Thursday evening session of Continental Congress.  President General Merry Ann Wright, along with National School Chairman Donna Raymond, made the presentation following the KDS School report. The National Society Daughters of the American Revolution encourages its members to give to the DAR School program through the Friends of DAR Schools Fund. The Friends of DAR Schools Fund contributions pay for needed projects at the six DAR-supported schools.

Cox Primary Restroom Renovation

Considering its 63 years of continual use, the Cox Primary Building is in relatively good shape for its age with the exception of one area - the restrooms. The restrooms in the Gary Wiggins Cox Primary Building were renovated in the mid 1990's.  At that time these facilities were adequate, but over the years they have deteriorated to the point where something must be done.

Cuff Cottage

Several of the KDS campus cottages received exterior 'face lifts' over the summer.  New siding was installed at New York Cuff Cottage and Aebly-Howland Cottage thanks to the New York State Organization DAR, and the Indiana DAR sponsored a fresh coat of exterior paint for Schlosser Cottage.

If you have a "Did You Know?" article about KDS School, the Grant community, or the state of Alabama that you would like to share with readers of our monthly newsletter, submit it  to Heather Green at hgreen@nehp.net.  If you have pictures in a digital format that relate to the article, submit them along with the article.  Many of our readers are new to the area and do not know the wonderful, rich history of KDS School and the Town of Grant.  I am sure they will be enlightened with something that you know and take for granted that everyone else knows too.

Did You Know?
Minor Cottage

Minor Practice Cottage was built in 1935 and named for Ann Rogers Minor of Connecticut. It served as the residence of the school's home economics teacher and as a practice cottage for home economics students. The girls in the class would take turns staying in the home and practicing skills such as cooking, cleaning, laundry, etc. When boys started taking home economics classes in the early 1980s, the cottage was no longer used for practice. Today it is used as a faculty residence.
