Spring at KDS

Dogwood

Like most of the country, North Alabama experienced a mild winter and an early spring this year. The beautiful blooms that emerged in March throughout the KDS campus are now starting to give way to green grass and warm weather, but we wanted to share the joy of spring with the friends of the school.

KDS Classrooms Using New Technology

Allison Carr

KDS teachers and students are fortunate to have use of modern technology in their classrooms. The acquisition of many of these devices and programs are made possible by in-kind giving programs as well as funds directly donated by DAR Chapters and individuals.

KDS Tennis Teams

Tennis

The KDS High School tennis season is in full swing with Mr. Gavin Moy coaching both the boys' and the girls' teams. This year there are nine boys and eight girls playing on their respective teams. The teams have been successful so far in the goals they set at the beginning of practice to improve individual skills and to perform better in season play, as most players have better match records compared to last season records. Both teams recently received the Sportsmanship Award at the Marshall County Tournament, an award voted on by the individual players in each of the county teams.

KDS Softball Team

The KDS softball team got off to a great start this year with its new coach, Larry Bolin at the helm.  This year's team is made up of 11 girls; 3 seniors, 4 juniors, 3 sophomores, and 1 eighth grader. Some of the early goals for the season, set by Coach Bolin and his Lady Patriot team, were to win 10 games, place in a tournament, host and win the area tournament, beat archrival Guntersville, and to play in the annual Gulf Shores Spring Break Tournament.

Letters to "Any Soldier"

Twenty-One Years Later

Letter
Most school children have at one time in their lives written letters of encouragement to the brave men and women in uniform serving our country and, most likely, very few receive a reply. Recently, a package arrived at KDS with a reply from letters written more than 21 years ago.

Recipes from the Famous Basket Luncheon

Farmers' Pork Chops - Emma Farmer

4 pork chops                   1 clove garlic (minced)

salt and pepper              4 Irish potatoes (peeled and sliced)

2 large onions (sliced)  1 1/2 cup sour cream

1/2 tsp dry mustard        1 1/2 tsp salt

cooking oil

Roll the pork chops in flour and brown in cooking oil that has had added to it the garlic, salt, and pepper. Place the potatoes in a casserole dish. Put the pork chops on top of the potatoes. Arrange the onions on top of the pork chops. Blend the sour cream with the dry mustard and salt. Pour this mixture over the top of the onions. Bake at 350 degrees for 1 hour and 40 minutes.

Mrs. Farmer retired from teaching after many years at KDS. Besides teaching the material in the textbooks, Mrs. Farmer taught her students the importance of conservation long before the term "green" was coined to mean earth friendly. We look forward to seeing her each year when she comes to visit students and staff on Retired Teacher Appreciation Day and the Administration Office Christmas Open House.

If you have a "Did You Know?" article about KDS School, the Grant community, or the state of Alabama that you would like to share with readers of our monthly newsletter, submit it  to Heather Green at hgreen@nehp.net.  If you have pictures in a digital format that relate to the article, submit them along with the article.  Many of our readers are new to the area and do not know the wonderful, rich history of KDS School and the Town of Grant.  I am sure they will be enlightened with something that you know and take for granted that everyone else knows too.
