Major Restoration Project for

Pennsylvania Log Cabin Underway

Log Cabin
The Pennsylvania Log Cabin

The Pennsylvania Log Cabin on the KDS DAR School campus was constructed by local folks in 1935 in one of Alabama's last old fashioned "house raisings."  As was typical of pioneer custom, it was built on a stone foundation with 200 peeled yellow pine logs, 8" in diameter and forty feet long. Originally built as a library and later used as the KDS DAR School Administrative Office, today the Log Cabin is being used as a "Heritage Hall" Archives & Museum for area historical documents, antiques and photos.

Executive Director's Travels

Director's Travels
Lance Bass and Heather Green

There is always much anticipation associated with my travels to DAR state conferences, and I cannot wait to visit with dear friends of the school and meet with new friends as I travel throughout the country this spring.

"I always meet the nicest people in Mississippi!" This was the caption of a photo I posted to my Facebook page back in February. Imagine my surprise during the Mississippi State DAR Conference in Jackson when on opening night I spotted Lance Bass of the music group NSync.

ASDAR State Conference

Given that Kate Duncan Smith DAR School was founded by the Alabama Society in 1924, it seems only logical that Alabama Daughters would be some of the most loyal supporters of the school.  This is one reason the annual ASDAR Conference is such an important event for KDS.  It's also just a great opportunity to visit with friends from across the state and to showcase the students who have the privilege of attending Alabama's DAR School.

During the three-day conference, KDS representatives man a sales booth and talk with interested ladies about the projects and programs of the school.  Brochures and other promotional and informational materials are distributed as well.

Recipes from the Famous Basket Luncheon

3-Day Coconut Cake - Jean Selvage

1 box Duncan Hines Golden Butter Cake Mix cooked as directed in 2 round cake pans. Cool and slice each layer into two layers.

Mix:

1 package (12 oz.) frozen coconut

1 carton (8 oz.) cream cheese

1 cup sugar

Reserve one cup of this mixture and frost between layers. To the reserved frosting, add 1 carton (8 oz.) Cool-whip. Cover top and sides of cake. Put cake in the refrigerator for 3 days in a Tupperware cake container or any that fits securely. Bring to room temperature before serving.

Jean Selvage worked at KDS from 1892 to 1996 as custodian and greenhouse manager. She is also known for her homemaking skills. The hand-sewn casserole covers and jams and jellies she made were popular items at Continental Congress and the KDS Dedication craft shows for many years.

If you have a "Did You Know?" article about KDS School, the Grant community, or the state of Alabama that you would like to share with readers of our monthly newsletter, submit it  to Heather Green at hgreen@nehp.net.  If you have pictures in a digital format that relate to the article, submit them along with the article.  Many of our readers are new to the area and do not know the wonderful, rich history of KDS School and the Town of Grant.  I am sure they will be enlightened with something that you know and take for granted that everyone else knows too.
