Issue: #29

Volume 2, Letter 29

July 9, 2012

My good friend Cliff sent me this link for excellent food storage advice.

With all of the fresh produce being picked from home gardens, from CSA's and Farmers markets, this is a perfect time to focus on how to effectively store your food without plastic.

Here are a few of the interesting pieces of advice:

1) Avacados are best stored in a paper bag on the counter.

2) Keep lettuce in an airtight container in fridge.

3) Keep spinach in an open container in the crisper of your fridge.  Spinach loves to stay cold.

4) Keep tomatoes out on the counter.  Don't refrigerate.

5) Potatoes and squash should stored in a cool dark place.

6) Keep asparagus in a cup of water on the counter.

7) Keep all greens in the fridge in an airtight container with a damp paper towel to prevent dehydration.

8) Beets - cut the tops off and store as greens.  Wash the beets and store the root with a damp cloth on top.

and so on!

My take home point today: Good storage is good eatin' ,

Enjoy summer,

Neodymium Magnets

The incidence of unintentional, yet dangerous battery and magnet ingestion in little children is on the rise. This is primarily due to an increase in the exposure to these devices in children's toys. Another source of these magnets is desktop adult magnet sets.

Magnets cause direct injury to the intestines by binding to each other with impressive force in the intestine pinching the bowel and causing perforations, twisted bowel and infections.  These injuries can result in serious injury requiring surgery.

What to do?

1) Be very cognizant of your surroundings with little children who like to mouth things.  Keep these devices out of reach when possible.

2) If you even remotely think that your child ingested a magnet, please have them evaluated with an X-ray for evaluation and removal if needed.
