Issue: #20
May 7, 2012

Volume 2, Letter 20

May 7, 2012

It is time for the beach!!!  Everyone is gearing up to enjoy the beauty of the sun and waves.  Below I will touch on sunscreens and the sun.  In this article lets talk about remedies for beech related issues.

Jellyfish:

What types are indigenous to the Carolinas??  Pictures

1) Cannonball - Mild venom

2) Mushroom - Mild

3) Southern Moon - Mild

4) Lion's Mane - Moderate

5) Sea Nettle - Moderate

6) Sea Wasp - Potent

7) Man O War - Potent

What to do if exposed?

First and foremost, assess the person for signs of anaphylaxis and treat accordingly.  Most important is to call 911, if you think that someone is reacting to a jellyfish sting with anaphylaxis symptoms.

For more local reactions:

1) Apply a compress of vinegar or sea water and sand paste for 30 minutes. Then scrape off stingers with a credit card and then apply a compress of vinegar for 30 minutes to stop the venom release.

2) Do not rinse w fresh water.  It can activate the venom.

3) Calendula cream or cortisone cream can be used for itching and discomfort

Burns:

If you unfortunately get a sunburn, then apply aloe plant jelly directly to the burn.  Commercial aloe products are available if necessary.

Swimmers ear:

To prevent this issue, I recommend using a kleenex tissue and rolling it into a needle to introduce into the ear canal at the end of the swimming day. This removes the water from the canal which can cause a bacterial growth and then an infection.  This is simple and effective. The kleenex will wic out the water and keep the ear dry.  Never place anything firm into the ear canal for risk of injuring the tympanic membrane.

Treatment with topical antimicrobials is very effective when the first signs of swimmers ear develop.

My take home point today: Enjoy the beach with some thoughts about prevention.

Sunscreen

What type, when to use, how often???

We all need vitamin D.  Our wonderful sun provides it for us.  Now that the heat is back let's plan accordingly.  In North Carolina we get excellent vitamin D producing rays from March until November.  Your skin color will dictate how much sun you can get safely.

Your goal is to avoid pain/burns.  Most people can tolerate 30 to 60 minutes a day a few days a week under the sun without sunscreen without negative consequence.  Be careful at peak sun midday.

Here is some sunscreen advice:

1) SPF 30 is the number to get.
2) Zinc or titanium are the best ingredients for sunscreens.
3) No sprays!!!!!
4) Use moderate amounts and reapply every 2 hours.
5) Hats and swim shirts in intense sun are great.

Brands that I recommend:

1) Blue Lizard
2) Aveeno
3) All Terrain
4) Mustella

Get your sun safely,

Dr. M
