April 2, 2012
The time has come to think about social media, movies and gaming. My son is now 8 years old and on occasion he has had unsupervised media exposure. At sleepovers and other events, he has already been exposed to inappropriate (in our minds) movies and games. What are the implications of such exposures?
Sex and violence are the biggest problems that we see. Unsupervised friends can expose your children to sexual media content and violent games. It has not been enough to simply educate my children on the do's and don't's of living respectfully at the appropriate age.
These exposures will desensitize a young child to the wrongs of violence and the sexual culture that is pervasive for the teens. Staying innocent and naive is hard in the new century.
Here are some thoughts:
1) Talk to older children and encourage them to respect the young age of innocence. Communication is the key to all successful relationships.
2) TALK WITH YOUR CHILDREN EARLIER THAN YOU THINK NEED BE about your goals for a healthy mental growth. Listen and explain in truth the things that they question regarding sexuality, violence and life. They need to learn their morals from you before they learn it from the media or peers.
3) Set rules for social media use and visit the Facebook page of your child. This is not intrusion as much as it is safety from bullying and negligent exposure. Having a Facebook page is not a right it is a privilege. After 18 years of age, the game is as they see fit.
4) Engage privacy settings and content settings on all media devices including televisions.
5) Let your child's friend's parents know your guidelines for your children. Be polite and respectful of their house rules while discussing yours. They are likely quite similar, but being proactive can prevent an awkward situation.
6) Check out this site.
My take home point today: Be proactive on this issue, you will not regret it!

Biotin
|
By request.
Biotin - What is it?
A B vitamin (#7) that is necessary for cell growth and metabolism in the body. It is important in fatty acid synthesis and gluconeogenesis (sugar metabolism). It has been shown to be important for hair and nail growth.
Symptoms of biotin deficiency include: hair loss, skin rashes, eye irritation, depression and lethargy.
Sources of biotin include eggs, swiss chard (greens) and nuts. All of these foods are loaded with many functional minerals and vitamins. I am a big fan of greens, nuts, beans and eggs as a staple of our diet.
Always aim for a varied, colorful, natural, local and organic diet as best you can.

Recipe of the Week
|
A delicious sandwich.
Ingredients:
1 or 2 slices of whole grain bread (you can see seeds) Spreadable guacamole or 2 slices of avocado 2 tomato slices 2 slices prosciutto 1 slice of organic havarti cheese A handful of sprouts Field greens Fleur de sel Fresh ground pepper
Combine all ingredients as you would any sandwich. Sprinkle with a touch of fleur de sel and pepper. Cut and eat.
*If you do it open faced with one slice of bread, put the prosciutto on top to hold it together.
Enjoy,
Dr. M
