Eating behaviors are a constant stress for parents regarding their children and them selves!!

How many people do you know that have emotional eating issues?  How many children eat together with parents who model effective eating habits?  How many children are involved in the whole meal process so as to appreciate the food itself. 

Ancient cultures lived and died with food availability.  They felt a different bond with the nourishing qualities of food.  Today we eat food often purely for taste and not its benefit to us.   With companies promoting salt,sugar and fat, we are lost with over indulged taste buds and lost constitutions of moderation and respect for food.

Here are some ideas to promote a new healthy childhood bond with food.

#1-10) Do not reward illness, emotional stress or great success with unhealthy food.  It promotes a belief in the child that these foods are necessary and useful during these positive and negative stressful times.  Think of the teenage girl who eats a gallon of ice cream when she breaks up with her boyfriend because as a kid ice cream was given to make her feel better.

11)  Have your children prepare an entire meal with you 2 times a month.  Take them shopping.  Have them watch and help (age appropriate) clean and prepare food.  Have them stir and dish out the food. 

12) Take them to a local farm to meet the farmer and his/her animals and land.

13)  Teach them to read labels about nutritional content.

14) Eat together as a family as often as possible.

15) Do not eat off of the child menu at restaurants (mostly junk).  Have them eat regular food just like mom and dad.     

My take home point today:  Relearning how to eat to live!

Hippocrates said walking is mans' best medicine. Pharmaceutical companies would have us believe it is the Pharmacy.  Dr. Mike Evans gives a lecture called "23 1/2 hours- What You Can Do For Your Health".   In it he explains why exercise is the most important modality for wellness. At the end he makes one simple request......

Can you limit your sitting and sleeping to 23 1/2 hours per day?

The excellent book Blue Zones lists exercise as a key component to longevity.

Food Inc.

Dear friends,

 

The McKinney Academy is hosting its last wellness lecture of the year on this coming Thursday March 22nd at 6:30pm.  We will be showing the award winning documentary FOOD, Inc.  Following the movie, we will also have food and farming experts available for questions and discussion.   If you eat food and are at all interested in what we eat and how it's produced, this is NOT a movie you will want to miss.   I have outlined below a more detailed description of the documentary.  Please RSVP if you plan to attend by replying to the [email protected].  This event is free and open to our community.  Please pass this on to anyone who you think might be interested!

The McKinney Academy Wellness Committee is pleased to present FOOD, INC. A 2008 American documentary film directed by Emmy Award-winning filmmaker Robert Kenner. FOOD INC. lifts the veil on our nation's food industry, exposing how our nation's food supply is now controlled by a handful of corporations that often put profit ahead of consumer health, the livelihood of the American farmer, the safety of workers and our own environment. Food, Inc. reveals surprising and often shocking truths about what we eat, how it's produced and who we have become as a nation.  A discussion panel will be held immediately after the viewing and is free to the public.

 

 

"T." McLeod will be our featured speaker on Thursday!

McLeod has a lifetime of knowledge on the land of North Carolina and remains an unbelievable asset to our community.  He has made a valiant effort to live sustainably and helps others on their own sustainable living journeys.  He is a small organic grower with a laying flock of free range organically fed hens and oversees a flock of sheep at Edgewood Farms. Following a passion to connect people to the land he operates McLeod Organics "Soil for the Soul" located at the Bradford Store in Huntersville, NC. 

 

 

 

Recipe of the Week

 
 
Oatmeal Pancakes

Ingredients:

1/2 cup whole wheat flour
1 1/2 cups cooked steel cut oatmeal
2 tsp brown sugar
1 tsp baking powder
3/4 cup unsweetened almond milk
1 egg 
1 tbsp canola oil
1/2 tsp cinnamon

Add the flour, cinnamon, baking powder and sugar to the oatmeal and stir.  Mix in egg, oil and milk.  Then cook pancakes on a skillet as you have done for years.
