Volume 1, Letter 46

November 7, 2011

The ever present world of advertising is dramatically affecting our population.  In a new study by the Rudd Center for Food Policy we see a persistent effort by companies that produce high calorie, low quality sugar beverages to target children.

"Beverage companies have pledged to improve child-directed advertising," said lead researcher Jennifer Harris, PhD, MBA, Director of Marketing Initiatives at the Rudd Center. "But we are not seeing a true decrease in marketing exposure. Instead companies have shifted from traditional media to newer forms that engage youth through rewards for purchasing sugary drinks, community events, cause-related marketing, promotions, product placements, social media, and smartphones."

In 2010, teens viewed 18% more TV adds and heard 48 % more radio adds for energy drinks than adults.  From 2008 to 2010, children and teens were exposed to twice the amount of soda adds on TV.  It seems that despite a pledge not to target children, these companies have continued the onslaught.  Children who view the most TV are at the greatest risk.

Marketing to minorities is a major problem according to the study.  Read the results and be a voice for change in your school, soccer team or anywhere.

When I coach a team, I make it clear from day 1 that sports drinks are not healthy and are not part of our teams goals.  Let us go back to fruit and water after practice and games.  Our parents had it right long ago.

Air Cleaners

Asthma and other lung disorders are increasing in prevalence worldwide especially in developed nations.  This issue we will discuss a response to the air pollution side of it.

In a study by Butz AM et. al. we see an intervention to control air pollution by a High Efficiency Particulate Air cleaners.  They looked at 126 inner city kids in Baltimore with persistent asthma and the effect that HEPA cleaners have on their disease and their environment.    Over the next 6 months, the study evaluated household particulate matter(pollution) and asthma symptom free days.  At the end of the study period, the intervention group had 33 less symptom days per year and significantly less particulate matter than a control group.

Think about the amount of medicine that can be avoided just by reducing household pollution exposure.  This is the hallmark of an integrative approach to asthma.

This raises another question.  If the household environment is irritating them, does it also irritate us at a lower level?  I would say unequivocally, YES.  Our houses are sealed tight these days.  In 2011, there are more chemicals released into the air from household products than ever.  The sum total of the information available is that we do have risk.

What to do???

1) Air your house out routinely when weather permits.
2) Change your air filters every 1-3 months
3) Consider a HEPA machine
4) Clean your house with safe products - see the link
5) There are many plants that are believed to help reduce air pollutants.  Consider looking into some healthy houseplants
6) Think positive - always useful!!!!!!!!!!

Recipe of the Week

Squash and Quinoa - gluten/dairy free

Get a few (2/3) acorn squash.

Turn the oven to 375 degrees.

Cut the acorn squash in half and spoon out and discard the seeds. Place the squash in a roasting pan.  Brush the inside of the squash with olive oil and maple syrup.  I like Trader Joe's Maple Syrup for its great flavor.  Let a little collect in the bottom of the acorn.  Salt and pepper to taste.

Pour some water into the pan.  It helps keep the squash hydrated.

Cook the squash until it is tender. Use a knife to poke it for tenderness.

Filling - Can be ANYTHING!!!

Make two cups of Quinoa according to box directions.  Add dried cranberries, raisins and cashews.  I like 1/3 to 1 ratio of berry/nut to quinoa.  Other options to add include cooked apples, celery, dates, prunes, etc..

Put it together -

Pour the excess maple syrup out of the squash and into the quinoa mix.  Mix together and then add back into the acorn squash halves.

Most kids will love the quinoa mix and encourage them to try the squash.
