Friends,
What a beautiful day here in Carolina! I am grateful to be an American and Carolinian today. I wish everyone happiness, freedom and prosperity today. |

July 4, 2011
Happy 4th of July! At times like this I like to reflect on how gifted and blessed we all are to live in this great country despite its failings. Having traveled to many foreign countries, I marvel at how great this country and its people are.
We celebrate this holiday with knowledge that we have a great gift that is freedom. I think that we can reflect in our own way on how this country has provided for each one of us and how we can continue to help it and ourselves flourish.
I recently held a camp for children with asthma. The main theme of course revolved around their disease, but I tried to hammer home a new belief system for them.. I called it CHOICE.
The thought that they could choose happiness over pain and sadness at all times despite the imperfections of life was a novel idea for them. Your perception of your reality is very important and can dictate how you feel.
For example, choosing to think that an unhappy person who just yelled at you needs help instead of taking it personally can be very liberating to an inner city child who is surrounded by pain. Looking at an unpleasant scenario with a happy filter WILL change your physical response to that situation.
Full circle -- I hear a lot of people complaining about the dysfunction of this country lately. Let us instead celebrate its strengths and model the future we want to live in. Thank God for the people that led us to this great place we call the USA.
My take home point today: Think in the power of positive happy thoughts. Happy Independence Day.
Live well and positive,
Dr. Magryta
