A Precious Homecoming

"I've never had an employment gap," exclaims Precious. "But, this is the first time I've had a housing gap!"

A loving mother, Precious found herself in a predicament following complications from giving birth to her now 2-year old daughter. Forced to take extended medical leave, Precious lost her job while away. And, the relationship with her husband ended.

With a giving heart, Precious agreed to take custody of two teenage nieces, whose father had become incarcerated and whose mother had taken to the streets. "For all practical purpose, I'm their mother," says Precious.

Precious soon found another full-time job, but bills and burdens had already pushed the family into homelessness. Doubled up with an elderly family member, Precious needed help to get back into safe, decent, affordable housing.

That's when she found Community Link.

Our Homeless to Housing program met Precious with a Social Worker to provide a lifeline of support and counseling, while a Housing Coordinator guides the family through the maze to find and keep affordable housing.

"Doors have come open because of Community Link," says Precious. "This help will provide an opportunity for my kids to actually live their lives!"

Working full-time at a day care center, Precious is on her way to housing and is thrilled that she'll have a "place in which she can call home!"

Want Affordable Housing In Your Backyard?

Is this affordable housing? Yes!
"It just takes one exception and we've got a disaster."

This comment was voiced by a parent commenting on the potential safety threats for her children at a recent hearing about affordable housing being developed in Charlotte's Elizabeth community. More on that story can be found online at The Charlotte Observer.

The hearing represents a specific community during a point in time. But, the topic of affordable housing has long been debated. Many remain unclear on what affordable housing even means.

Ask yourself (and be daringly honest):
  • Does affordable housing drive down the existing property values?
  • Is affordable housing just for the homeless?
  • Will affordable housing increase crime to the area?
  • Isn't affordable housing just for the poor? Is that fair?

Certainly, no judgment from Community Link on what you believe. But, we do feel affordable housing is critical to any thriving community.

Take time to be educated, speak up, and share information with others. You'll find some great information on our website, not to mention a reality check on affordable housing. And, be sure to check out the sneak-peak for a new documentary on affordable housing that's scheduled for release in late February. Or, click below.
