Greetings!
For the past 6 months, my 10 year old daughter has not wanted to hold my hand in public. Last night she upped the ante - she wouldn't hold my hand as we sat on the couch together and watched TV (and there wasn't even anyone else in the room!). "OUCH!" - was my in itial reaction, and she immediately became aware of my disappointment. As quickly as the expression left me, I knew that I wasn't pleased with my own approach. That negative feeling I had in my gut told me, "Marlene, that's not the way you really wanted to handle this". I'm sure that you have faced this or a similar issue with your youngsters (or adults in your life!). It is a given that they will pull away, argue with siblings or rebel in some way, despite your best attempts to intervene. It is all a part of the growing up process that we "old" people so easily forget. If you have found yourself in one of these situations, or if you live in fear that these days are coming, please read on because I want you to know you are in good company. I want to share with you how I am thinking and feeling about this, and how I hope to do a better job with my daughter the next time.

Help! I Raised an Independent Thinker!
|
|
Ok, I have come to the conclusion it's virtually impossible to make others change. I've tried it - with my daughter, with my husband, with close friends and family - but to avail. I try for a while and then usually give up or move on. Asking others to change so that we can feel better never works!
This is particularly true when it comes to our children. As parents, we often attempt to gain control of the behaviour of our children by offering rewards for good behaviour and punishment for bad behaviour. It's ok to admit it. We all do it. "If you do this, you can have dessert", "If you don't do that, we will go there after school"
But, be honest with me (and yourself), do you ever see any significant beneficial behavioural change as a result of that?...

Testimonial
"Its funny - last night, I was channel surfing and stopped on ONN where Oprah was talking about the Law of Attraction. I found it to be both interesting and inspiring - then this morning up you come to our meeting and inspire me some more! I think it's time I seriously consider applying this in my life."
