Paul Fowler
Paul Fowler, WIST executive director, will discuss the institute's research into renewably sourced isoprene, a platform chemical that can be used to make biofuels, rubber and other products.

Fowler's presentation, "Finding Value in Waste," is at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 5. Admission is free. The Golden Rondelle Theater is at 1525 Howe Street in Racine.

Paper mill sludge, which is currently landfilled at an expense to mills, could provide the raw material for production of biofuels and other products. WIST recently received a patent for a process to separate biomass into pure cellulose and lignin. The cellulose can be used conventionally, such as in paper making, or it can be converted to fermentable sugars. The sugars can be used to make biofuels but can also be used to make other renewable chemicals for industry including isoprene, currently derived largely from petroleum and used in the making of rubber, plastics and pharmaceuticals.
