Greetings!

As another year draws to a close, we're mindful at WIST of the new friendships we've made and the wonderful relationships extended with so many people who have taken a positive interest in our work and have joined in our efforts. We appreciate you.

All of us at the institute wish to extend warmest holiday greetings to each of you and best wishes for a successful 2012.

WIST is subject of short film
"Today in America" photograher Zahira Collazo frames a shot of Old Main on the UWSP campus.

The University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point and WIST are the subject of a short feature to be aired as part of the "Today in America" syndicated television program. The program is hosted by Terry Bradshaw.

The finished piece will run five minutes but it required a full day of shooting on campus, beginning early enough on a cool November morning for breath to fog - which could have been a problem for our early outdoor interview shots. But by the time the camera was rolling bright sunshine had begun to warm the day.

The piece features short takes with UWSP Chancellor Bernie Patterson, New Page Vice President Ed Buehler, and Centergy Executive Director Barb Fleisner, as well as footage of WIST staff, WIST labs, and the new Waste Management Building at UWSP. Old Main provided a familiar background for several interview shots.

According to its website "Today in America" seeks to capture this era of changing economic times and digs into the knowledge and passion of each of its featured guests. "Today in America" with Terry Bradshaw successfully blends business news stories, lifestyle features and in-depth interviews with doctors, scientists, inventors, business owners, philanthropists and newsmakers from a variety of industries. "Today in America" airs during the day on a variety of well-known news networks throughout the United States and Canada.

Airing has not been scheduled yet but we'll post times, dates and channels on our website when they become available. Meanwhile, we've posted photos of the day's shoot on our website, chronicling WIST's experience in the making of a short news feature.

An artful collaboration

Pulpatwetend
Paper pulp for art paper, at the wet end of the pilot paper machine

A novel collaboration is underway between WIST Laboratory Services, the Paper Science and Engineering Department and the College of Fine Arts and Communications at UWSP. Graphic art students require a special paper to handle the inks they use. The art paper is expensive. WIST's pilot paper plant is perfect for materials studies and small developmental runs. Paper Science and Engineering students thrive when learning new techniques and facing new challenges. Add those elements and one has the makings of an artful collaboration. For WIST and the Paper Science and Engineering Department the collaboration provides an opportunity to expand capabilities and serve a niche market and creates a new training experience for students. Art students benefit by saving money on paper supplies and they have the opportunity to learn more about what it takes to produce this special paper. And the university benefits in the strengthening of ties through shared knowledge between departments.
