Research, Education, and Laboratory Services
Through its three divisions, WIST offers laboratory services, outreach education, and research to create sustainability solutions for businesses and organizations. Technology and ideas developed by WIST and its partners will spur economic growth in Wisconsin and the region and help all of us preserve and protect a healthy environment for future generations.

There's a lot going on in Wisconsin in terms of bioenergy research and development, Ben Brancel, secretary of Wisconsin's Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection, told participants at a recent WIST event. That's the good news. The challenge, Brancel said, is connecting the various players in order to maximize chances of success and fully take advantage of the state's abundant resources.
Brancel spoke at Focal Point 2011: Celebrating a year of Successful Collaborations, a half-day research symposium and networking event hosted by WIST and UWSP in the campus's Dreyfus University Center. Brancel said his department is tackling the challenge outlined by meeting with individuals, companies and organizations around the state and working on opportunities for collaboration.
Following the kickoff breakfast, participants had the opportunity to take in presentations by UWSP faculty and staff on research projects underway in areas ranging from sustainable transportation to groundwater pollution monitoring. The event ended with a luncheon and a presentation by UWSP forestry professor Les Werner on a new laboratory facility on campus aimed at enhancing understanding of ecological processes and ecosystem functioning. The facility, called the Environmental Microbial Analysis and Research Lab, also offers fee-based services for molecular analysis, including microbial community profiles and microbial biomass estimates.
WIST plans to make Focal Point an annual event, with each event concentrating on a different topic or research and development area. Watch for announcements as Focal Point 2012 develops. |
WIST publishes Annual Report

Just over one year ago the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point officially launched WIST as a multidisciplinary center aiming to develop and commercialize new, sustainable technologies.
Now the institute has released its first annual report and it is available online. The 36-page report highlights achievements in research, education and laboratory services, including coverage of a patent application published, a new cooperative services agreement to add more paper testing services, and a feature on how WIST is making a positive difference in student experience at UWSP. |
Project FRESH

In 2009 UWSP dining services switched from Styrofoam to biobased service ware. That reduced the amount of petroleum-based service ware on campus but the full benefits of the switch weren't realized because the biobased plastics were still being disposed of rather than recycled.
Now, through a student-led research effort, UWSP is implementing a separate collection program for the biobased plastic service ware. It's called FRESH, for Focused Research Efforts for Sustainable Habits.
"Students are helping to educate the campus on differences between various bio-based products and testing the economic feasibility of diverting recyclable biobased plastics from the waste stream," said Waneta Kratz, a UWSP graduate student hired by WIST to coordinate the project. "Data we're collecting will help determine the environmental and economical sustainability of these products."
The project is funded by grants from the Wisconsin State Energy Office and the UWSP Student Government Association.
Read more about the project and view a short video on the Project FRESH pages on the WIST website (the link to FRESH is under Special Projects).
