DATCP Secretary Ben Brancel is keynote speaker
at Focal Point 2011
WIST and UWSP are pleased to announce that Ben Brancel, secretary of Wisconsin's Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection, will provide keynote remarks at Focal Point 2011. Brancel will speak at the networking breakfast that opens the event Oct. 4 at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point.
Brancel has served as a leader in a number of agriculture organizations and in the Wisconsin Assembly from 1986-1997. He served an earlier tour as DATCP Secretary from 1997-2001, appointed by Gov. Tommy G. Thompson. He was Wisconsin state director of the U.S. Department of Agriculture Farm Services Agency from 2001-2009.
WIST biofuels research and the institute's research into new, value-added uses of agricultural and forest resources aim to boost the state's economy, areas that intersect with DATCP's charge to help develop Wisconsin's growing bio-industry.
Focal Point 2011 provides an opportunity to meet and visit with professionals enthusiastic about and actively involved in helping grow Wisconsin's economy through applied research and new market development. Join business leaders, economic development professionals and university faculty and administrators on Oct. 4 at UWSP for a networking breakfast and half-day seminar series. This event will celebrate WIST's first year in creating sustainable solutions through collaborative work.

New kraft recovery course offered Oct. 26-28; register now
WIST is offering an opportunity to learn techniques of kraft recovery from one of the most experienced experts in the field. Dr. H. Jeff Empie, a retired professor of chemical engineering at Georgia Tech, has literally written the book on the subject: "Fundamentals of the Kraft Recovery Process." He has more than 30 years' experience with kraft recovery technology in both industry and academia. Empie has served as a senior research engineer at the Institute of Paper Science and Technology, International Paper Co., and Hercules, Inc. He holds three patents on kraft recovery technology.
A three-day course, "Kraft Recovery," is being offered by WIST at UWSP Oct. 26-28.
The kraft recovery process is an essential part of the kraft pulp mill and represents a complex, integrated chemical and energy recovery system. The objective of this course is to present a review of the technical fundamentals of the process, with an emphasis on solving typical process problems.
To underscore the importance of the kraft recovery process, small, incremental process improvements can result in millions of dollars in annual savings to a typical kraft pulp mill.
The course fee is $750 and includes lunches and morning and afternoon break refreshments. To register, email Angie.Hauer@uwsp.edu. To view or download a flyer with additional information, click here.

Hands-on Papermaking course offered Oct. 6 & 7 at UWSP
Registration is open now for WIST's next Hands-on Papermaking course, scheduled for Oct. 6-7 at UWSP. The course alternates classroom instruction with guided sessions running WIST's pilot paper machine. Course instructor Kelly Klaas notes that most of the students in the papermaking classes aren't typical paper machine operators, but rather people from other departments within a paper company who want a better understanding of what it takes to run a machine and what machine operators go through in their daily work.
The course is a good match for anyone who needs the basics, has transferred from another industry, is new to operations or does machine maintenance.
You can view photos from a recent class here, and view or download course details and registration information here. See the WIST website for more information about the institute's pilot paper plant, paper testing services and other educational offerings.
