New one-day course offered: Introduction to Life Cycle Assessment and Environmental Product Declarations

LCA chart

Life cycle assessment is increasingly recognized as a valuable tool in measuring total environmental effects of creating, using and disposing of a product or service. This six-hour course at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point is an introductory course on life cycle assessment (LCA), product category rules (PCR) and environmental product declarations (EPD).

Instructor Karyn Biasca, a professor of paper science and engineering at UWSP, has extensively studied LCA and has taught these principles in several venues. This introductory course will provide participants with an understanding of how LCA can be used in decision making processes, explain how LCA, PCR and EPD are related, and serve as a primer for a more extensive LCA course to be offered later by WIST.

Hands-on Papermaking course offered Oct. 6 & 7 at UWSP

Technician at paper machineRegistration is open now for WIST's next Hands-on Papermaking course, scheduled for Oct. 6-7 at UWSP. The course alternates classroom instruction with guided sessions running WIST's pilot paper machine. Course instructor Kelly Klaas notes that most of the students in the papermaking classes aren't typical paper machine operators, but rather people from other departments within a paper company who want a better understanding of what it takes to run a machine and what machine operators go through in their daily work.

The course is a good match for anyone who needs the basics, has transferred from another industry, is new to operations or does machine maintenance.

You can view photos from a recent class here, and view or download course details and registration information here. See the WIST website for more information about the institute's pilot paper plant, paper testing services and other educational offerings.
