Research, Education, and Laboratory Services
Through its three divisions, WIST offers laboratory services, outreach education, and research to create sustainability solutions for businesses and organizations. Technology and ideas developed by WIST and its partners will spur economic growth in Wisconsin and the region and help all of us preserve and protect a healthy environment for future generations.

Greetings!
WIST has enjoyed great support from Wisconsin's Congressional delegation as well as state legislators and local officials, who see federal and state funding for research and education as an investment in Wisconsin's future. We were pleased to have the opportunity to meet with U.S. Sen. Herb Kohl recently; you can read more about that below. Thank you for your continued interest in the Wisconsin Institute for Sustainable Technology. Best regards, Paul Fowler Executive Director

U.S. Sen. Herb Kohl visits WIST, partners
American Science and Technology in Wausau hosted Sen. Herb Kohl, D-WI, and representatives from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point and the University of Wisconsin-Superior on April 20. AST is a partner in biofuels research with both universities.
Researchers and administration officials briefed the senator on their respective projects and the potential for economic gains for Wisconsin. The research aims to develop new technology that will create additional, value-added uses for Wisconsin's farm and forest products. A longtime friend of agriculture, Kohl is chairman of the Senate Agriculture Appropriations Subcommittee. He has been strongly supportive of the biofuels research efforts and WIST.
WIST biofuels research receives major funding from the U.S. Department of Defense.Technology developed will help the military ease its dependence on fossil fuels and also has implications for civilian use. A key goal of the joint project is to develop a biorefinery that can be implemented at existing pulp and paper mills, which would generate new jobs and more revenue for the industry. More information about WIST research is on our website. |

UWSP student researcher featured at Posters in the Rotunda
| Laura Lorentz poses with a poster illustrating her research. |
.
Laura Lorentz is a UWSP senior studying forest management, GIS and spatial analysis. As a student researcher, she has worked with Paul Doruska, a professor of forestry and WIST Scholar, on a project to determine residual biomass from red pine harvest.
This spring, Laura was honored by being selected as one of 12 UWSP students to display posters based on their research at "Posters in the Rotunda" at the Wisconsin Capitol in Madison. The annual event brings top students from campuses around the state to celebrate undergraduate research. Laura enjoyed meeting with legislators during the event and visiting with the many people who toured the display.
Laura also presented her poster at the UWSP College of Natural Resources undergraduate research symposium on campus April 8, 2011, and at the inauguration of UWSP Chancellor Bernie Patterson April 15. Congratulations to Laura on her award-winning work at UWSP and best wishes for success in her career.
