Dr. Michael G. Scales Re-elected to Third Term as President
Dr. Ronald E. Eastman, chairman of the Board of Trustees at Nyack College and Alliance Theological Seminary, announced in July that Dr. Michael G. Scales was re-elected to a third three-year term as the institution's president.
"When Dr. Scales was elected the 12th president of Nyack College and Alliance Theological Seminary six years ago," said Dr. Eastman, "the search committee and full Board of Trustees were unanimous in our decision. Today we still concur that the accomplishments of the Scales administration have been extraordinary--and particularly in an age when stability in leadership is imperative for corporations and institutions not just to survive--but to thrive."
In the past six years, there has been an impressive list of milestones. The first doctoral degree (the Doctor of Ministry); new bachelor's degrees in nursing, biology, and criminal justice; and full online undergraduate and graduate degrees in business and leadership have been added. Enhancing Nyack's strong academic offerings, the school has received renewals of accreditation from the Middle States Commission on Higher Education with two special commendations (one for the president's vision and leadership), from the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education, from the National Association of Schools of Music, from the Council for Social Work Education, and from the Association of Theological Schools. This fall, in partnership with the local public school district, Nyack College will offer courses in Arabic and Mandarin Chinese at Nyack High School.

Nyack College Named a 2012 "Great College to Work For"

Nyack College has been selected as one of the 2012 Great Colleges to Work For by The Chronicle of Higher Education.
The results of The Chronicle's fifth annual report on the academic workplace are based on a survey of nearly 50,000 employees at colleges and universities nationwide. Nyack was recognized as a leader in the categories of work/life balance, confidence in senior leadership, supervisor/department chair relations, and respect and appreciation. The Great Colleges program is based on a two-part assessment process: an institutional audit that captured demographics and workplace policies from each institution, and a survey administered to faculty, administrators, and professional support staff.
"It is an honor for me to work with faculty and staff who are such extraordinarily accomplished men and women. Our success as an institution can be credited to the part that each associate contributes to fulfilling our mission. Most importantly, our students are the beneficiaries of being educated by these exceptional role models," says Nyack College/ATS President Dr. Michael Scales.
This is the second year Nyack has participated in The Chronicle's Great Colleges program.

Homegoing: Nyack NYC Bible Professor Passes Away

The Nyack campus community mourns the passing of adjunct Bible professor Dr. Jhan Moskowitz, a founding member of the evangelistic outreach, Jews for Jesus. His fatal head injury was the result of a fall he suffered in a Manhattan subway on September 4.
Rev. Charles Hammond, associate dean of Student Life at Nyack's New York City site, alerted the campus community to unite in prayer for Dr. Moskowitz. On Wednesday evening Hammond shared the news of the professor's passing, commenting, "The City campus is in mere shock! But, yes, he's with Yeshua!"
The testimony of Jhan Moskowitz's coming to faith in Jesus can be seen here.
Please remember the Moskowitz family in your prayers.

Film Screening: "Zero Percent," on Higher Education in Sing Sing
The Center for Scholarship and Global Engagement (CSGE) at Nyack College will screen "Zero Percent," a documentary on college education in Sing Sing Prison on September 25 from 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. in President's Hall, Shuman Hall on Nyack's Rockland campus at 186 South Highland Ave, Nyack, NY.
The first-ever college graduating class from Sing Sing received their Bachelor of Science in Organizational Management degrees from Nyack College on October 19, 2001. Nyack played a key role in restoring prison education at the correctional facility when state and federal funding ended.
"Zero Percent" examines the Hudson Link for Higher Education in Prison's program at the maximum security prison and its transformational impact on the lives of the inmates. The title of the documentary comes from the fact that none of Hudson Link's graduates have been re-incarcerated for new crimes after their release.
Perhaps the ultimate success story is that of Nyack alumnus, Sean Pica, now Hudson Link's executive director and a member of the October 2001 graduating class. He will join Dr. Nina Balmaceda, director of Nyack's Center for Scholarship and Global Engagement (CSGE), and others in a panel discussion following the film.
For more information about the film screening and panel discussion, contact the CSGE office at 845.675.4582. To learn more about Hudson Link, visit http://www.hudsonlink.org.

He served as a vice president for The Christian and Missionary Alliance and is currently acting district superintendent for the Alliance Northwest District. His life took a dramatic turn four years ago when he contracted a mysterious disease that destroyed his muscular system and nearly took his life. During his recovery, John earned his doctorate. He and his wife Joanna have completed their first book, An Honest Look at the Mysterious Journey, that tells the story of their recent experiences and the challenges to their faith along the way.

Peer Tutors Needed for Students
Gina Jacobs-Strain, director of testing and tutoring in Nyack's Division of Student Success, is seeking recommendations from professors of new and returning students who are willing to serve as peer tutors. Faculty should refer students who have received the highest grades in their courses.
Tutor applications and tutor request forms are available in the Bell Tower on the 1st floor on the Nyack Rockland campus and on the 6th floor in the Testing and Tutoring Office in Manhattan.
The Testing and Tutoring Center provides content tutoring, as well as time management tools and a variety of workshops on topics such as note-taking and advocacy. Students can establish weekly appointments with tutors. An attendance list will be given to professors who give extra credit to students who use the Center's tutoring services.
The Center also welcomes professors to donate or loan course textbooks to optimize tutoring sessions.
For more information, email Gina.Jacobs-Strain@nyack.edu or phone her at 845.675.4451.
