New Bachelor of Arts in Biology at Nyack!

The College of Arts and Sciences is proud to announce that the Bachelor of Arts in Biology program has been approved by the New York State Education Department. Applications are being accepted for fall 2012.

The Biology BA program is designed for students who desire a liberal arts education with a solid foundation in biology. Students are prepared for graduate study in biology or toward careers in other disciplines that require a significant background in biology. This is the first natural science degree offered by Nyack College.

"The new biology program is in keeping with Nyack's recent expansion in the sciences," said Dr. Fernando Arzola Jr., dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. "The School of Nursing was established, the Computer Science program was redesigned and updated, and we have also submitted an application to NY State for an AS in Engineering program. We hired five new faculty in the Division of Mathematics and Sciences, three in Biology, one in Mathematics, and one in Physics. Furthermore, we established a second science lab on the Rockland campus, and we will have three science labs on the new New York City campus."

New Degree Programs at Nyack!

Dr. David TurkDr. David F. Turk, Nyack College provost and vice president for academic affairs, announced that several new degree programs have been approved by the New York State Education Department. The MS/MAT in TESOL online has been approved, making it the third online degree that the State has approved; the MA in Ancient Jewish Origins of Christianity has been approved and will be offered in the fall of 2013; and most recently, the BA in Biology was approved.

Nyack Joins Prestigious HHMI Science Education Alliance

Nyack College is a new associate member of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute Science Education Alliance (HHMI-SEA).

HHMI, a non-profit organization with the emphasis on advancing biomedical research and science education, is one of the largest privately funded philanthropies. The Science Education Alliance was established in 2007 to be a catalyst for change in science education and to become a resource for science educators. HHMI has committed over $4 million over the first four years to the first Alliance program--the National Genomics Research Institute.

Nyack will participate in the prestigious National Genomics Research Initiative, a two-part, yearlong course in which students are taught science by involving them in scientific discovery on a national scale. The SEA-PHAGES course is aimed at beginning college students, who make real discoveries by doing research on viruses that infect bacteria, known as phage. In the first part of the course, students isolate phage from locally collected samples. Given the diversity of phage, each one is almost certain to be unique, so students get to name their newly identified lifeform. The phage is purified, characterized, and DNA isolated. The DNA is sent out to be sequenced between semesters. In the second half of the course, the students receive their phage DNA sequence and they use bioinformatics to analyze and annotate the DNA from their phage.

"This is a great opportunity for Nyack College students to participate in authentic scientific research which has a national and global impact," says Dr. Fernando Arzola Jr., dean of the College of Arts and Sciences.

Nyack DC Commencement

The Nyack College DC Commencement ceremony was held on Saturday, June 16 at Evangel Assembly in Temple Hills, MD where Rev. St. Clair Mitchell, an alumnus of the DC MSOL program, is the senior pastor. This year's commencement speaker was Dr. Ronald Walborn (pictured right), Alliance Theological Seminary dean.

Nyack DC Dean Rich Gathro (pictured left) states, "Commencement is the most exciting annual event of the Washington, DC campus. We started two new traditions three years ago. First, we hand each graduate a "servant leadership towel" with the Nyack logo to mark their accomplishment. Second, we have all faculty members greet them as they come off of the stage. We have an incredible celebration and everyone who participates tells us that it will always be one of their most memorable experiences."

This last happened at sunrise on June 8, 2004, and will not happen again until the year 2117. Dr. Huster explained the significance of this unusual astronomical event, how it tells us the size of the universe, and how it relates to the search for life. Protect Your Summer Travel Investment

You insure your car, your house, your life, and your health. Now, be sure to insure your trip. Whether it's the adventure of a lifetime or plane tickets to your college reunion, consider travel insurance, because even if you are fit to travel, circumstances around you can change. Kids break bones. Elderly parents become ill.  Weather is unpredictable. Last year nearly 20% of all flights were delayed, over 3% were cancelled, and thousands were diverted (according to the Bureau of Transportation).

Travel insurance can reimburse for expenses caused by trip delays, interruptions, or cancellations, whether due to an ill traveler or family member. Some policies even provide an option to add "Cancel for Work" and others offer "Cancel for Any Reason."

Plane tickets for a family trip could easily cost thousands! Consider all those other non-refundable expenses: condo rentals, cruise ship tickets, greens fees, tour operator fees...

Regardless of your destination or health situation, consider travel insurance. It's available through the Alumni Insurance Program. Learn more here.
