AGSC Pioneer
Dr. Craig Ellison
Home With Jesus

Dr. Craig Ellison, founding director of Nyack's Alliance Graduate School of Counseling (AGSC) and a pioneer in the field of Christian counseling, passed away on Tuesday, March 13, 2012.

His beloved wife Sharon said he went home to be with the Lord "in complete Shalom."

In his professional career, Dr. Ellison wore many hats, among them psychology professor, author, clinician, researcher, and radio show host ("Perspectives on Personal Living"). He will long be remembered as the patriarchal figure of AGSC--a treasure to students, faculty, and staff.

Dr. James Chin, an AGSC professor, eloquently wrote about Dr. Ellison in an article that appeared in Nyack's alumni magazine, The Path (Winter 2009, page 9), on the occasion Dr. Ellison's retirement.  Click here to read Dr. Chin's touching tribute.

Please keep Mrs. Ellison and the rest of the family in your prayers.

Health & Science Awareness:
First Nyack Student Research Conference

"Health and Science Awareness" was the theme of the first Nyack College Student Research Conference on March 29 on the Nyack College Rockland County campus. Distinguished plenary speakers were Dr. David Freed, president of Nyack Hospital and Dr. Mark Wade, president of Arise and Walk Ministries Foundation.

The event was chaired by Dr. Jacqueline Washington, head of Nyack's biology and chemistry department and co-sponsored by the Center for Scholarship and Global Engagement, directed by Dr. Vilma Balmaceda.

Over 85 Nyack students presented some 50 research posters on diverse topics such as "Food Waste and the Implication for Global Warming," "Pancreatic Cancer," "Natural Home Remedies vs. Synthetic Drugs," "Obesity and Genetics," "Genetically Modified Foods," "The World's Water Crisis," and "Cystic Fibrosis."

Nyack at Student Aid Alliance Advocacy Day

Amanda Padilla, Phillip Strangolagalli, Patrick Almonor, Todd Vester, Shawnia Pratt, Felicita Ruiz, Shaun Jacobs, Christien Jackson, and Fernando Arjona were the nine Nyack College students among 900 high school and college students, faculty, and staff from schools across New York State who attended the annual Student Aid Alliance Advocacy Day in Albany, NY on February 7, 2012.

During various meetings they attended, students had the opportunity to thank legislators for their continued support of higher education, to voice their concerns about financial aid, and to share their personal stories of how a college education is helping them to fulfill their dreams.

Psychology major Amanda Padilla said, "It was an honor to be introduced on the assembly floor by Assemblywoman Ellen Jaffee. It was great to learn how much our government cares about what we stand for."

The students were accompanied by Nyack staff, Earl Miller, executive director of community relations, and Nathaniel Perez, HEOP counselor.

Social Justice Day Luncheon

Nyack College hosted its annual Social Justice Day celebration on January 13 at the Nyack Seaport in Nyack, NY. Prior to the luncheon at the Nyack Seaport, a reception to introduce the luncheon honorees was held in the office of Nyack President Michael G. Scales on the Rockland campus.

The 2012 recipients of the Social Justice Day Award were Drs. Edmund and Susan Gordon, founders of the CEJJES Institute in Pomona; the Honorable Ellen Jaffee, 95th District Assemblywoman in Rockland County; and Mr. James F. Kralik, retired Rockland County Sheriff.

John Seigenthaler, Sr. was the keynote speaker at the luncheon. Mr. Seigenthaler, who founded the First Amendment Center in Nashville, is a former president of the American Society of Newspaper Editors, and served for 43 years as an award-winning journalist for The Tennessean, a Nashville morning newspaper. At his retirement, he was editor, publisher, and CEO of the publication and is now chairman emeritus. In 1982, Mr. Seigenthaler became founding editorial director of USA Today and served in that position for a decade, retiring from both the Nashville and national newspapers in 1991. He also served in the U.S. Justice Department as special assistant to Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy, which led to his role as chief negotiator with the governor of Alabama during the Freedom Rides.

Benefit Concert at Palace Theater

Internationally acclaimed vocalists, Joel (bass) and Shelley Jameson (soprano), professors at Nyack Rockland's School of Music, produced a benefit concert at the Palace Theater in Manchester, NH on Sunday, March 11. All proceeds from the concert benefited their friend, Linda Rainville, a recent recipient of a life-saving lung transplant, with staggering medical expenses that have accumulated as well as the costs of ongoing treatments to support her recovery.

The Jamesons, a dynamic husband and wife team, have graced stages around the globe, among them the Boshoi in Moscow, the Japanese National Theater in Tokyo, and Teatro Municipale in Santiago, Chile. They have also performed at Carnegie Hall, New York City Opera, Washington Opera, and Los Angeles Opera. The program included selections from La Boehme, La Traviata, Romeo and Juliet, The Magic Flute, and popular musical theater compositions.

Alliance Theological Seminary Presents...

"Project Experience"

The Alliance Graduate School of Missions (AGSM), supported by the Center for Scholarship and Global Engagement, hosted Project Experience from January 25 until February 10 on the ATS Rockland County campus. This three-week interactive museum tour provided an opportunity for the Alliance Theological Seminary community to get a glimpse of a day in the life of the marginalized and poor around the world--and even in our own communities. Project Experience was open to visitors from campus and the community, including classes, church groups, and individuals, and each toured through the simulated cycle of poverty and its devastating effects.

"Project Talibe"

Alliance Theological Seminary graduates are working to promote economic and spiritual growth through Project Talibe, an effort led by International-Workers-in-Residence Brian and Michelle Davis. The Davises are working on building a center in Senegal for young boys that will provide an education and vocational skills as well as discipleship. The fall 2011 missions project has already raised $11,000 which is more than half the goal of $20,000 at the start of the spring 2012 semester! Work has already begun in Senegal on the vocational training school.

Leadership Rockland

Nyack College Executive Director of Community Relations Earl Miller, and a 2007 alumnus of Leadership Rockland, coordinated the multicultural community segment of Leadership Rockland 2011, a 10-month educational program created for leaders in businesses and not-for-profits in Rockland County. The day began at Nyack College in Shuman Hall with an address given by Dr. Anita Underwood, dean of Nyack's School of Business and Leadership on "Rockland County: The Multicultural Community."

Program participants learn about Rockland County demographics and when different ethnic groups settled in the area. The multicultural community session explores cultural diversity and its challenges within the context of education, economic development, public policy, and community development. Other stops on the daylong tour included the Hibernian House in Pearl River; The CEJJES Institute in Pomona; the Islamic Center of Rockland County; and the Jewish Community Campus.

The Increasing Demand for Long Term Care

Last year, the nation's Baby Boomers started turning 65; over the next eighteen years, 80 million Americans will turn 50. This unprecedented increase in our aging population will significantly impact the demand--and therefore the costs--for long term care (LTC) services. It makes financial sense to consider LTC insurance now because securing coverage today could be far more economical than paying for uninsured LTC expenses in the future.

Our Alumni Insurance Program advisors are here to help. Their considerable experience will help you navigate the options to find the best policies for you. For more info, including free quotes and free guidance, click here.
