Did You Know?

"The place to be happy is here, and the time to be happy is now. In a very real way, we are the authors of our own lives. We do not remember days, we remember moments. Life is the journey-live your life on purpose. Every moment is a place we've never been. Meet today with expectation, enthusiasm and surprise. It's time to start living the life you've imagined!"

"Turn your shoes into a football field... when your shoes are beyond resuscitation by even the most skilled cobbler, make sure they're recycled rather than sent to landfills; The rubber in their soles has a multitude of uses-for example, as an ingredient of the "turf" for all-weather sports fields."

Quote of the Month

"We are all affecting the world every moment, whether we mean to or not. Our actions and states of mind matter, because we're so deeply interconnected with one another."

Greetings!

GREETINGS!

September is one of those transitional months between the heat of summer and the coolness of fall. We will still experience warm temperatures and also the trend toward cooler weather. I hope you all enjoy the fall foliage. It's such a beautiful time of the year with such bright colors, but unfortunately it won't last long. The cooler and colder temps are just around the corner. The change of season is also a reminder that it won't be long and another year is creeping up on us and about to close.

We continue to help clients find the right talent, and help you find a job that you love.  We hope you are finding the articles informative and useful.  Feel free to  it to anyone who may be interested.  And, we invite you to 'Like' us on Facebook too.

Welcoming Furry Friends To Work

Pets_Work According to a recent article in the Minneapolis Star Tribune, more companies are welcoming employees' furry pets to the workplace. For example Nerdery, a web-development firm with 400 employees, could
potentially have 30 to 50 dogs at the office on any day of the week.  "Dogs have been part of the Nerdery culture since day one," says Nerdery co-president Mark Malmberg. The company not only has an open-door dog policy, but also a place called the "Nerditorium" where the dogs can run and play.

A recent study by Virginia Commonwealth University found that having their dogs nearby "significantly reduces employees' stress levels and can make work more satisfying for fellow employees." According to the American Pet Products Association, 17 percent of US workplaces allow animals on site including Google, Autodesk and Amazon.

At the interactive design firm bswing in Minneapolis, Anna Smith's West Highland terrier, Greta, comes every day, and is, "super mellow, super chill. All you have to do is step over her. Greta waits for me by the door. The routine is so clear to her. We get up, we eat and she is waiting to go."

Dogs (like kids) really enjoy a routine and it appears they often benefit from regularly joining their owners at work. Tracy Fuller from the Nerdery said, "My dog behaves better at home when I bring her to work.  She's tired, and she has gotten a lot of attention. Seeing other dogs and other people is a lot better than sitting at home on the couch by herself."

The benefits of animal companionship are well supported by research whether it's the health benefits of elderly pet ownership or the soothing effect therapy dogs have on hospital patients. It's only in the past few years that studies have shown that dogs relieve stress and help productivity in the workplace.

In 2010 researchers at Central Michigan University in Mount Pleasant showed that dogs in the workplace may act as social catalysts and encourage collaboration. "In one of the experiments, people were asked to complete a group task: those groups with a dog in their midst tended to score their teammates higher in terms of trust and team cohesion."

A dog-friendly office contributes to the overall casual and comfortable work environment. It typically allows people to focus on what's important: the business of being creative, collaborative, and serving the customer. But like anything there's always a downside. Dogs or animals can be a distraction at the workplace. Co-workers' allergies can also be a potential problem, so employers with dog-friendly offices are making that clear to applicants before they're hired.

If you are contemplating a move to another company, maybe it's one that has an open door doggie policy. If so, let us help by reviewing your resume and getting you started with the right job search strategy. E

Gainers

The Bloomberg Star Tribune 100 index of Minnesota's 100 largest public companies' stock closed at a record high of 207.9 on September 14th, and total returns rose 13.8% year-to-date. As a result, 65 companies are up for the year and 33 are down.

"Companies that have stayed active in the mergers and acquisitions market have generally fared better than companies that tread water."  For example, when Stratasys, a maker of rapid prototyping devices, acquired Israel-based Objet, the shares rose sharply and the return for the company is "up 111.6% to year-to-date, more than any other public company in Minnesota." Graco Inc., maker of fluid handling equipment, is up 30.3% so far this year after the company closed on its $650M acquisition of Illinois Tool Works.

Other Minnesota companies with shares that traded at all-time highs included: Pentair, Ecolab, Arctic Cat, Valspar, and SPC. Along with stocks being ahead of themselves, we have a number of people feeling that the economy is recovering sufficiently including Jim Paulsen, investment strategist at Wells Capital Management. Jim indicated recently that, "We have averaged 165,000 net new jobs per month compared to 130,000 a month last year... The labor force has grown faster than any time in this recovery... I think the roots of the economy are getting stronger." Even the Minnesota Chamber of Commerce indicated from a recent survey that 31% of Minnesota employers believe the economy is improving compared to 13% a year ago.
