Did You Know?

"We are more worried about our waistlines than our wallets. That's one conclusion that can be drawn from a recent study of consumers by Allianz Life Insurance of North America. From a November-December online survey of 1,000 adults by Synovate's eNation for Allianz  found that the most important focus areas for 2012 are health and wellness (45 percent), financial stability (30 percent), employment (15 percent) education (7 percent) and leisure."

Go Green!

"You may be used to thinking about the amount of energy, or calories, that the food you eat provides you with. But have you thought about how much energy goes into growing and processing your food?  The toll can quickly add up - modern food production and distribution systems can use up to 15 times more energy than the resulting food actually provide you with. To cut the production calories, try to buy as many fresh, unprocessed foods as possible."

Economy Gains Steam

economyAccording to a recent article in the Minneapolis Star Tribune and the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the nation added jobs every month in 2011. In fact, "employers in the United States added 212,000 jobs in the month of December." It was also the sixth consecutive month the economy showed a net gain of more than a 100,000 jobs.

New jobs were spread across industries with transportation and warehousing, retail, manufacturing and restaurants all adding jobs. As of December 2011, the private sector experienced 22 consecutive months of job gains, recovering 36 percent of jobs lost in the peak tough period of the recession from January 2008 to February of 2010. The private sector has added 3.2 million jobs while the government cut about one-half million jobs.

The Present Situation Index, which reflects the consumer's attitude toward the current state of the economy, "rose from 11.2 points to 38.3 - the largest monthly gain since June of 2004."  Factories have increased production and are growing. The Institute for Supply Management, a trade group of purchasing managers recently indicated that the manufacturing index rose to 52.7 percent in November, up from 50.8 in October. Any reading above 50 indicates that we are growing. Overall factories have grown for 28 straight months.

One area in manufacturing that appears to be brighter these days is medical device manufacturing. The New Brighton, Minnesota based company Remmele Engineering has been winning more projects lately due to a lot more activity in the medical device sector. The company makes components for large publicly traded medical device companies as well as for clients in aerospace and defense. "The business unit logged double-digit sales growth right through the recession and has maintained that growth through the erratic recovery, said Vice President John Bowden." The company has hired 20 new people in the last few months - mainly machinists and engineers at its plant in Big Lake, Minnesota. The employees work on sophisticated components that go into minimally invasive surgical devices. The company has also been adding capital equipment and buying machinery.

The unemployment rate also fell to 8.5 percent, the lowest level since 2008 and down from 8.7 percent in November. "The rate seemed to be dropping at a faster rate than the number of new jobs would imply, according to several articles, most likely because new businesses and the newly self-employed are less likely to be captured by the Labor Department's survey of businesses, from which the job numbers are drawn, than by its survey of households, from which the unemployment rate is calculated. The drop in the jobless rate came from real gains, not from discouraged workers giving up looking for work

We know that this is not enough to restore employment prior to the recession, but we are adding jobs and moving in the right direction and that's what we want to hear.

So if you are a hiring manager who begins to experience more work (including hiring) than you can handle, we can help.  Our prices are typically 50% lower than our competitors. Email [email protected] and we can take some of the load off your plate.

Do You Work For a Top Workplace?

award
There are research firms who conduct surveys to help clients create places where people want to work. These firms get a buzz from making people's working life more rewarding. They help clients get the best from their employees by keeping them motivated to give their best and be passionate about their work so they stay with the company. Each year publishers like the Minneapolis Star Tribune partner with research firms to conduct surveys and gather the top workplaces.

These surveys have shown that good employers share similar traits that workers consider important. Some of them are:
  • Feeling "genuinely appreciated."
  • Believing that the organization is "going in the right direction."
  • Having "confidence in the leader of the organization."
  • Being rewarded with a competitive pay program.
  • Having flexibility for a work/life balance.
In Minnesota, familiar names including General Mills and Thrivent Financial ranked among the top large companies to work in both 2010 and 2011.  Smaller companies have claimed top spots, including gas and groceries chain Kwik Trip; education publisher Pearson and realty company Keller Williams. An employee who worked for Kwik Trip indicated, "When I first got the job, I was so excited to go to work I was even having dreams about Kwik Trip.

Employers, do you consider yourself a top workplace?  If so, why? If not, are you experiencing turnover? Employees, are you working for a company who is keeping you motivated to give your best and doing all that they can so you will stay with the company? If not, email [email protected] and we can tell you how we can help.

We would like to thank all of you who continue to make Core Management Search a success.

Sincerely,
