Did You Know?

There are approximately 78 million Baby Boomers-born from 1946-1964 and the first ones are turning 65 this year. Key words for Baby Boomers are optimistic and competitiveness. Boomers have had many blessings and privileges. They have had to fight for much of what they have because of the sheer numbers in competing for the same jobs and promotions. A generation of "strivers, rewards of title, a better shift, seniority, the corner office, up-front parking spot and any other marker that let you and especially others know how you were doing" ... and now this generation will begin to retire or think about retirement.

Go Green!

"Despite what detergent ads might lead us to believe, most clothes don't need washing after every wearing. To keep your clothes fresh put away clean enough clothes right after wearing to stop them from mixing with the truly unwearable stuff. If they are slightly crumpled, hang already worn garments outside or by a window to air or in the bathroom while you take a shower to steam out light creases. Apart from benefiting the environment, washing and drying clothes less often keeps them looking newer. With less laundry to do, you'll have more time and money for the activities you really enjoy."

Hiring Is Getting Better

uparrow2According to the latest Manpower Employment Outlook Survey, hiring intentions are positive and will continue in the United States throughout the summer. "Employers in 50 states report positive hiring intentions and 42 out of 50 states anticipate considerable increases in the third quarter. Of the 100 Metropolitan Statistical Areas surveyed, 99 percent reported positive employment outlooks." The report indicated that we have had seven straight quarters of employment since first quarter of 2010.

Employers in 11 of 13 industry sectors had good news:

Leisure & Hospitality (+27%)
Mining (+25%)
Wholesale & Retail Trade (+20%)
Professional & Business Services (+19%)
Durable Goods Manufacturing (+17%)
Nondurable Goods Manufacturing (+16%)
Transportation & Utilities (+14%)
Construction (+11%)
Information (+11)
Financial Activities (+11%)

and Other Services (+7%)

Employers in 2 industry sectors have a slightly negative outlook:

Government (-1%)
Education & Health Services (-2%)

Of the 18,000 employers surveyed, 20 percent anticipate an increase in staff levels in their 3rd Quarter 2011 hiring plans, while 8 percent expect a decrease in payrolls, resulting in a Net Employment Outlook of +12%.  After seasonal adjustments, the Net Employment Outlook is 8%.

The Minneapolis Star Tribune recently reported that casual restaurants, manufacturers and health care companies did well in the first half of 2011. For a more consistent performance, industrial companies like Ecolab, Polaris, Graco, Fastenal, and Donaldson and Valspar have hit all-time highs in the first half. Other winners included Select Comfort, Buffalo Wild Wings Inc., Medtox Scientific Inc., Granite City Food & Brewery, Caribou Coffee Company, Inc. and Winmark Corporation.

A recent annual survey by US Bank of nationwide small business borrowers indicated that things are starting to improve. US Bank surveyed 2,923 small business owners in April and May with sales of $10 million or less. Seventy percent expect to keep staffing at current levels, while 22 percent plan to add jobs. For Minnesota companies, 29 percent expect to hire in the next three months.

Reports have indicated that one in five employers plan to add staff in the next three months. As companies get back into hiring mode, potential and talented candidates will once again receive several offers and negotiate for a higher salary. Is it the beginning of the "War on Talent?"

What Is Meant By Job & Cultural Fit?

orgfitJob fit is the degree to which your skills and experience are relevant to the job and the degree to which you find the roles, activities and responsibilities satisfying.

Organizational fit
refers to your compatibility with the company's values and mode of operation. While organizational fit covers a range of organizational attributes, the most common element is the compatibility between the potential employee and the company's values. This is referred to as cultural fit.

In the past companies have focused on identifying potential employees on their skills and experience. If they found a candidate with the right set of skills and experience in a similar job, it was decided that they would be able to perform effectively in the new job. Skills and experience are definitely important, but research is showing that individuals selected not only on the basis of the right set of skills but also on cultural fit will contribute faster, perform better and stay longer with the company.

A lot has changed in the workplace over the last 10 years. Knowledge, intellectual capital and cultural qualities represent the competitive edge for most companies. Cultural fit has become an important part in the selection process.

Companies are adding this to the recruitment process and using a number of methods such as behavioral-based interview questions targeting values, panel interviews and reference checking to determine cultural fit. They are also using on-site visits, trial work periods, pre-employment dinners and even cultural (motivational fit) questionnaires to assess an individual's suitability for the company's culture.

When assessing for job and cultural fit, it's a match that increases employee satisfaction and leads to better performance and productivity.

If you need some help on how to determine the company's cultural fit and prepare for the interview call us at 763.559.0977 or email us at jlentner@coremanage.com to discuss your opportunity in more detail.

We would like to thank all of you who continue to make Core Management Search a success.
