Did You Know? "Millennials value 'resume building' since they have been coached since preschool by having their Boomer parents create a portfolio that will outshine their 76 million cohorts to get into the best schools or land the best jobs. If you can make a case to Millennials that the job you offer can add a skill or experience to a crowded resume, it will be seen as an excellent reward." Lynne C. Lancaster and David Stillman

Go Green!
Despite its environmental problems, plastic can be useful. Make sure you are getting the most out of this valuable resource by re-using plastic packaging, then recycling it when it's no longer usable. Look for items made from PETE (marked with a number 1 inside a triangle), which is the most recyclable plastic. Recycling just one PETE bottle saves enough energy to power a 60-watt light bulb for six hours.

Quote of the Month
"YOU are responsible for your own life. Not your parents, your grandparents, your siblings, your teachers, your boss, your colleagues etc. Don't wait for someone to complete or fix you. Once you are responsible for your life, you become free and can move on."

Are You Having FUN at Work?
According to a recent article in the Minneapolis Star Tribune more and more companies across the country are making it FUN to come to work. Pizza, parties, picnics, and other new ways to have fun like daily foosball tournaments are back "on the menu of the American workplace."
3M, Graco, Target, United Health Group and Mosaic to name a few have planned big employee-picnics this year. Other events include movie nights, office outings at the baseball games etc. Companies are spending money on pay and benefits and now they are investing in the culture again and getting morale back to pre-recession days. "Let's have fun again," said Eric Gonzaga, a Minneapolis-based managing director for the compensation and benefits consulting giant Grant Thornton.
Fun in the workplace is a powerful tool for both recruitment and retention. After weathering the recession Cleveland Company, a benefits consulting firm, "decided it needed more employee bonding and levity in the workplace," and are planning for an afternoon bowling alley event. The employees are thrilled. Mary Younggren, owner of the Advent Group Inc., in Minneapolis says, "A lot of our human resource clients are focusing on employee engagement and trying to make the workplace fun. It's a buzzword right now and a tool that prevents people from jumping ship. If workers are engaged and are happy, they will stay where they are."
The Company Picnic People in Minneapolis, MN says mega-picnics can cost anywhere from $15,000 to $45,000 for one fun-packed day of grilling, soda, popcorn, rides and games for hundreds of employees and their families. Company picnics were down for the last two years but things have been picking up for 2011.
Since the bottom line is better, companies feel employees deserve some fun. According to Nerdery, a Web development firm in Minneapolis, "Fun has equal footing with work because it spurs creativity and problem solving. We kind of want this to be the place and ultimate destination for nerds", said spokesman Mark Malmberg. The company sponsors Friday night "Bottle Cap" keggers for its 200 workers and recently added a 250-seat theater that houses employee movie nights, staff and community meetings, pizza parties and more. It also offers yoga, a masseuse and video arcade games, buys lunch each week for the five employees who win the company's "shout out" award. "Money is really not everything, particularly to that millennial generation," said Mary Younggren, owner of the Advent Group Inc., in Minneapolis. "To them it's really about having a life."
So are you having fun at work? If not maybe the time is now to get your resume ready for an opportunity and company that's a lot more fun.

Tips For Getting Hired
To be successful in today's market, you need to set yourself apart from your competition. So, here are some tips that will land you a job offer.
Match Your Skills to the Job. You need to be a match for the specific job requirements. Find out what skills and talents the company is looking for and tailor your resume to the requirements of the job. Always include keywords, skills and achievements as they relate to the job. Research the Company Prior to the Interview. Researching the company and learning about the culture prior to the interview will give you a competitive edge over others. This shows interest and will give you the knowledge to talk intelligently about the company and ultimately increase your chances of getting hired. Be Consistent in Interviews & Ask Positive Questions. A good strategy is to be consistent in your responses with every interviewer you face in the company. Promote your skills and strengths and present your work history the same way every time. Interviewing should never be one-sided so prepare a set of intelligent questions that you can ask the interviewers. Communicate Your Past Success into Future Success. Prepare to give real examples of how your previous successes and achievements can be used to make a strong impact for the company. A past success predicts future successes so communicate your past achievements from the company's perspective. Ask for the Job. It is very important to let the company know that you are extremely interested in working for them. Tell them you feel you could really contribute to the company's growth. Tell them you are hoping that they extend you an offer so you can work for them. If you have additional questions, we are here to coach, guide and help you land the job of your dreams.
