"Generation Xers born 1965-1980 are an extremely resourceful generation and independent; who count on their peers and themselves to get things done."

Go Green!

When you are at work and need to go out to buy lunch, relax and eat your food in a café, instead of taking it back to your desk - you won't need to use any packaging, and you'll be more relaxed when you get back to the office.

Getting Back to Hiring

musicalchairs

Is hiring back to pre-recession levels? According to a number of business articles in some areas, we are back.  And so the idea of musical chairs will once again begin.

IT and Engineering started coming back last fall.  Popular skills in IT include, but are not limited to the following: Technical Support, .Net, C+, Java, Linux and PHP, and experience of application development for iPhones and Blackberries.

After two tough years, Ford Motor Company is planning to add 4,000 hourly jobs and 750 salaried workers this year. Alcoa Davenport Works is back conducting job fairs. Things are even looking better for MBA graduates. Job postings are up 85% from last year at Stanford Graduate School of Business. "And a new survey of MBA employees shows that 64% plan to hire MBA's from the class of 2011, up 4 percentage points from 2010.  A survey in the fourth quarter of 2010 by Focus.com, an online network of small business owners across the country, found that 54% of IT and software firms expected to increase their head count in 2011.  Other industries that are doing a lot of hiring are financial services (50%), health care (including pharmaceuticals) (48%), advertising and marketing (47%) and retail (43%)." Other areas include Human Resources, Finance, Consulting and On-Line Marketing.

The need for highly skilled people will more than likely heat up, making hiring more time-consuming and in some cases difficult. In fact a local CPA firm recently had two senior level Accountants give their resignations in the same week, a very good indication that hiring is back.

Not only are unemployed individuals finding work, but employed individuals are changing jobs for various reasons. Employers will continue to see 100-300 resumes per job posting and not all companies have sophisticated systems to get through all of them. This is where we can help. No project or job is too small or too big.

What's a Great Resume?

yespile

A great resume is one that gets YOU in the "YES" pile. A great resume is knowing what to include, what not to include, and what to highlight. It's one that takes you to the next step, the interview, and also helps you to articulate your responses to questions during the interview regarding your skills, education and work experience.

A great resume begins with writing a statement summarizing your qualifications as it relates to the job opening instead of an objective statement. For example, a job seeker who is looking for an Account Manager position would write a profile statement similar to this, A results oriented and self-motivated professional with extensive account management experience and a history of creativity, planning, managing, cost savings, and meeting timely demands.

The next step is to use bullets with short to medium sentences to structure the body of the resume. Always use action or keywords such as designed, prepared, and managed to begin your statements in the main part of your resume. Match your keywords in your resume to the keywords in the job posting. A potential statement in a resume would be An Account Manager for a staffing agency. A better statement would be Managed 20 strategic accounts resulting in revenue of $18M annually. The second statement is more specific and gives results - which is what employers are looking for when they review resumes.

Last but not least, be positive in your resume. Leave out negatives and irrelevant points. If you feel your graduation date will subject you to age discrimination leave it out.

So do you think your resume will land in the "YES" pile? Let us help you decide what to include, what not to include and whether or not you have the right keywords.

Send the job posting and/or your resume to us at jlentner@coremanage.com and we will give you feedback for FREE on getting your resume to land in the "YES" pile.

We would like to thank all of you who continue to make Core Management Search a success.

Sincerely,
