What does YOUR New Michigan look like?
Deadline for submission is April 20th!
After announcing our New Michigan strategy as part of the 2012 Michigan Turnaround Plan (MTP), we now are giving you the opportunity to tell us about your vision for the New Michigan.
BLM has launched an online contest andis offering $1,000 in total prizes to Michigan residents who submit a photo, a short video or a written submission (200 words or less) describing their vision for the New Michigan. To enter the sweepstakes, participants must be residents of Michigan and 18 years of age or older. All participants must complete the online registration form located on the Michigan Turnaround Plan Facebook page (www.facebook.com/michiganturnaroundplan).
All submissions must be received by midnight, April 20, 2012. Winners will be chosen in a random drawing at the conclusion of the contest. One first place winner will receive a $500 VISA gift card, and five second-place winners will each receive $100 VISA gift cards.

Steelcase CEO Jim Hackett credits his company's reaching the 100-year mark to good ideas more than anything else.
"We're human-centered as a culture, and therefore human-centered as a business," said Hackett, speaking to an audience of more than 500 Monday at the Grand Rapids Econ Club luncheon at the JW Marriott. Michigan economy shows bright spots across the state, from energy to autos and pizza to pills

At Kelly Services Inc., business is good -- quite good. In Michigan alone last year, the global staffing company placed approximately 2,500 more people in positions than it did in 2010, spanning industries and all lines of Kelly's business: temporary help, temp-to-hire and direct hires.
There's been steady, increased demand for Troy-based Kelly's services as the economy has strengthened. The staffing industry is "a bellwether of the economy, particularly as demand goes up and down," said Christopher Stark, Kelly territory vice president in Detroit. Read more . . . |

Talent shortage a top challenge for companies

Two-thirds of executives from U.S. manufacturers listed a lack of skilled applicants and resulting job vacancies as their biggest challenge moving forward. More than half said they haven't kept up with product demand because of the talent gap. The late summer survey involving 1,123 companies across 50 states also found:
About 95% said there was currently a shortage of industrial and manufacturing engineers at their company, and 60% characterized it as a moderate to serious shortage. That compares with 56% who said there was a shortage of "unskilled production" labor at their company.

Michigan 12th in 'green' jobs

The federal government's first estimate of who has the largest number of "green" jobs shows Michigan ranked 12th among the 50 states and the District of Columbia.
In 2010, nearly 80,000 Michiganders, or 2.1 percent of the state's total employment, worked at businesses that produced goods or provided services that benefited the environment or conserved natural resources, according to new data recently released by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Michigan's Economy Strongest Since 2006 in Comerica Bank Report

Auto sales pushed Michigan's economy in January to its highest level in six years, according to Comerica Bank's monthly economic activity index.
Michigan's index rose to 98 from December's 91, the best improvement among the five states Dallas-based Comerica monitors, said chief economist Robert Dye. The others are California, Texas, Florida and Arizona. Read more. . .

Engineers find new hope for jobs in Michigan

At an Engineering Society of Detroit job fair in Novi last month, open jobs outnumbered job seekers nearly 6-1.
Fifty-one companies, from Bosch to Hyundai to DTE Energy, looked to fill almost 3,500 positions. For the first time in a long time, engineers like Nancy Miron no longer were scared. The 54-year-old left Michigan during the recession for a job in Kentucky, only to be laid off there. She still owns a home in Royal Oak. Read more. . .
