Led by members of the Jewish Genealogical Society of Colorado, the program was developed to help you get started doing Jewish family history research. Each session includes an instructional lecture and a hands-on workshop to assist with the creation of family trees and historical research utilizing genealogical resources and techniques. Mentoring assistance outside of class will be available. The sessions are open to everyone. There is an $30 one-time fee for non-members for a book and materials which includes one year of membership in the Jewish Genealogical Society of Colorado. Attendance is not required at all seven sessions to participate; jump in any time to get started!
Again, for this session only (due to the hands on workstations available), RSVPs are required; please click on Terry Lasky. |
Our December Program is: "Paths to Citizenship: The Naturalization Process" with Carol Darrow
- Sunday December 11 from 10:00 til noon
- Jewish Community Center, 350 South Dahlia St, Denver
- Open to all
- Followed by mentoring workshop for JGSCO members, from noon til 2:00 pm
Not all immigrants chose to become naturalized citizens in the U.S. In fact, the number of naturalized citizens hovered around 60% of male immigrants through 1930. We'll look at the reasons why those people chose to become citizens and the process involved.
Carol Cooke Darrow, CG, is a certified genealogist with a degree in history. Carol is the co-author of "The Genealogist's Guide to Researching Tax Records." She is fascinated with examining the reasons why people "did what they did," and that includes immigration and naturalization. |

November Program Recap: DNA for Genealogy with Ric Morgan
  | | Ric Morgan |
At our November meeting at the JCC in Denver, Ric Morgan gave an engaging introduction to DNA for genealogy. His presentation provided a mixture of biology and genealogy, with an active and ongoing Q and A from the audience. Sometimes "DNA for genealogy" presentations can become too technical and too detailed for practical use, but Ric was able to explain the concepts and applications in a way that enabled all of us to take away a number of useful concepts.
For members, click on the following link to access Ric's two page handout....Ric Morgan handout. It contains some useful follow-up resources for you.
For those interested in reading further, click on the following links:
1. A blog article from Discover Magazine that talks about genetics and the Jewish people....Genetics and the Jews. 2. During the discussion, we referenced a recent book that you can find on amazon.com. It's called "DNA and the Bible: The Genetic Link".

World Memory Project - JGSCO members are participating!!
As we've been talking about for the past few months, the JGSCO has endorsed the World Memory Project as an important activity for our membership. If YOU are participating, please do let us know. Let us know how you're doing with your contributions, how many records you have contributed thus far, and anything else you'd like to share with us. If you're interested in participating and have any questions, please feel free to contact Barry Halpern with your questions. This project is a chance for each of our members to be involved in the creation of a searchable, online database related to the victims, survivors and families of the Holocaust. If you'd like more information on this project which is co-sponsored by the US Holocaust Memorial Museum and by ancestry.com, please click on World Memory Project.
