It isn't the Community, It's Me and It's YOU!

If you want to belong to the kind of community you like,
You need not slip your clothes in a grip
and start on a long hike;

For you will only find what you left behind,
for there is nothing new,

It's a knock at yourself when you knock your community,

It isn't the community, IT'S ME and IT'S YOU!

Real communities are not made by

men afraid someone else will get ahead,

When everyone works and no one shirks,

you can raise a community from the dead.

And if while you make your personal stake,

your neighbor can make his too.

Your community will be what you want it to be;

It isn't the community, IT'S ME and IT'S YOU!

Most people say their community folks are different,

or worse, but you and I know that is just not true!

It isn't the "unbusy" people, it's still the"movers & shakers" who make your community too!

 Your community will be what you want it to be;

It isn't the community, IT'S STILL ME & YOU!!!

A poem contributed by our membership drive consultant Mr. Paul Oliver with Chamber of Commerce Consultants of Fort Worth, Texas.

It has been a great week for our membership drive. At the time I am writing this, we are close to 100 new members and well on our way toward reaching our goal! By the time most of you read this newsletter, the drive will be over and I hope I can report to you in the next correspondence that we have surpassed our goal and collected many new members who are eager to make their investment in the chamber and be involved in creating a better Jones County!

Who Do You Think You Are?

Who Do You Think You Are?

I've recently gotten into this show on NBC, Who Do You Think You Are. The premise is an entertaining show which "follows some of today's most beloved and iconic celebrities as they embark on personal journeys of self-discovery to trace their family trees". Each show I have watched thus far has been thrilling with many twists and turns I did not expect.

I have long been a fan of history and genealogy. Not knowing much about my own, this show has really peaked my interest. I have several members of my extended family who are self-proclaimed genealogy experts on one section of our family or another but none that have really honed in on the Simpson-Shirley side.

Since I have been researching our roots I have found several connections that I never knew existed. Even some to right here in Laurel! A cousin's wife of mine who I always thought was from Alabama, actually had relatives in Laurel who owned Nicholson's Café at 525 Central Avenue from 1949 through the 70's and even lived on 10th Avenue a while. Other interesting connections I have found include a connection to a Simpson who helped compose the SMU Alma Mater, President James K. Polk, one of the settlers of Maryland, several ancestors who fought in the civil war and a few that are buried in Arlington Cemetery. I have even found connections to Scotland, Ireland and England as well as connections all over the United States.

I find history and genealogy fascinating because if we don't know where we come from, what are our origins, our history and our past, we can never fully realize and embrace how far we have come and what is yet to come in our future.

Last week Mitch, Sandy and I attended the 75th Anniversary of the Mississippi Development Authority. It was great to watch the history of that organization and of our great state. It is amazing the progress we have made in 75 years!

Just like MDA, this organization has had some great history and continues to build upon wonderful traditions, legacies and paths laid out by the founding fathers (and mothers) of the EDA. I am so glad to be a part of making a difference in the history of Mississippi and in Jones County! Our past is impressive, but our future is even brighter and I can't thank you enough for investing in our organization, with your time, money and  commitment to making Jones County better for our present and future!
