If You Don't Know Where you're Going, Any Road Will Get You There
"Would you tell me, please, which way I ought to go from here," said Alice
"That depends a good deal on where you want to get to," said the Cat.
"I don't much care where," said Alice.
"Then it doesn't matter which way you go," said the Cat. "--so long as I get SOMEWHERE," Alice added as an explanation."
"Oh, you're sure to do that," said the Cat, "if you only walk long enough."
-Alice's Adventures in Wonderland
At first glance, Alice in Wonderland quotes might sound like riddles and nonsense. However, if you search them carefully for inner-meaning, you will find these quotes rich in truisms and poignant to our lives, culture and our way of doing things. Take the statement above for instance, how many times have we said in our businesses, "If we were only doing SOMETHING different", "We need to do SOMETHING to get people interested in our business", "If only we could get people to do SOMETHING." The fact is people won't do SOMETHING unless they are led to do it. Unless you have laid out a clear vision of why they should do it or how it helps them. Creating a specific, measurable, time limited vision is the key. In order to motivate your customers, your employees, your community you must first not be like Alice. You must know where you are going and have a clear vision of how to get there. Sure, there may be detours in the road and bumps and turns, but with a vision of where you want to be and a vision of your goal, it is much easier to stay on a path that will get you there. Having a clear vision will also help you attract people who want to take the journey with you.

Are you having trouble with your vision (no, this is not a commercial for an ophthalmologist)? Call the Chamber (601) 649-3031. We'll be glad to talk with you about your business, your goals and give you an outside opinion of how to get on the right track. We can also connect you to a network of other businesses and resources that can help.
** I have to make a caveat about the above Alice in Wonderland quote. The website I pulled this quote from states, "The above quote is often mistakenly referred to as: 'If you don't know where you're going, any road will get you there.' But this line is not in the Alice in Wonderland books."
