Phillips Charitable is a foundation focused on providing timely assistance to a targeted population, including single parent families, wounded veterans, and promising high school engineering students. Many organizations, such as JBFCS, are available to help families in need, but sometimes, timing and procedure do not lend themselves to swiftly resolving a monetary problem.
Yvonne Essor-Robinson, MS, Team Coordinator at the Grant Square Borough Office for JBFCS’ Clinical Consultation Program, was presented the Child Advocacy Award from ChildStat.
ChildStat is a weekly event at ACS attended by the Commissioner and other executive and managerial staff as well as protective and casework staff that aims to improve accountability among caseworkers dealing with children in the ACS system.
We’re building up our corporate volunteerism. We had an amazing corporate volunteer event at Ittleson with attorneys from Kasowitz Benson Torres & Friedman LLP. They did planting on the grounds and then engaged in a craft project with the kids at Ittleson and hung out with them for a few hours! It was a fantastic event and we hope to engage with these folks again.
Morgan Stanley stepped to the plate again, as volunteers repainted our Genesis Domestic Violence shelter. It was a great afternoon working with truly dedicated people. Thanks to the 25 volunteers who took an afternoon to improve the lives of others.
Larry Jones, Director, West Side School Day Treatment, has called an end to the years he put into JBFCS. His presence will be sorely missed. As Paul Levine noted, “The impact of [Larry’s] work will affect JBFCS and our services to children and adolescents at the West Side School for years to come. His dedication, clinical instincts, and ability to provide a caring, safe, and supportive space for young men with complex challenges have changed the lives of hundreds of adolescents.”
The U.S. House of Representatives proclaimed July as National Minority Mental Health Month to provide agencies an opportunity to raise awareness about severe mental illness in the diverse communities.
Handbook of Community Psychiatry
Congratulations to Elizabeth Snipes, Caroline Peacock and Paula Panzer (pictured in order left-right-bottom) on their chapter in the Handbook of Community Psychiatry. This new textbook for public practice psychiatry fills a big gap in the academic world. The Handbook of Community Psychiatry reflects the rapid changes in the field, providing basic and specialized information in areas such as epidemiology, person-centered planning and care, innovations in practice, and treatment of special populations. Fierce Joy
An accomplished writer and filmmaker, Ellen Schecter, (pictured in the above image in the upper right of her book cover) has just had an incredible memoir. Fierce Joy, published. An entire chapter (and more) is devoted to her experiences in our JBFCS/NYJHC "Sustaining Our Spirits" support group (she was involved during a very difficult couple of years in her chronic illness journey, over ten years ago) and she really does a great job singing the praises of this JBFCS service!
The City Council of New York has approved two Capital Funding Requests for JBFCS. The City Council has awarded $229,000 to The Shield.
Also, the Ittleson Center was awarded $513,000 for fiscal year 2012/13.
Special thanks go out to Councilmembers G. Oliver Koppel from District 11 and Fernando Cabrera of District 14 for their support.
