A Few More Things About Garlic
Some fun facts about garlic:
- Vegetable or herb? It's both!
- 90% of the garlic grown in the United States is grown in California
- Garlic belongs to the onion family
- About 300 varieties of garlic are grown around the world
- People used to treat toothaches with garlic
- Garlic has been used for medicinal purposes for thousands of years
- China grows over 23 billion pounds of garlic! Yup, they're the largest producer in the world.
- Classified as Allium sativum
Parts and pieces of the garlic:
- a loose, crackly outer skin covers the entire bulb
- the bulb is made of several individual sections called cloves (unless it is a single clove variety)
- each clove is protected by a tight, oft-times difficult-to-remove sheath
- the leaves and flowers (bulbils) on the head (spathe) are also edible with a flavor milder than the bulbs and are usually consumed while young and tender
