ILA and USMX Resume Negotiations
The International Longshoremen's Association and U.S. Maritime Alliance (USMX) have agreed to resume negotiations that broke down on August 22 during the week of Sept. 17 at the request of a federal mediator. In a statement this morning, Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service Director George H. Cohen said "the parties have agreed to resume negotiations under our auspices during the week of September 17, 2012. Due to the sensitivity of this high profile dispute and consistent with the agency's longstanding practice, we will not disclose either the location of the meeting or the content of the substantive negotiations that will take place."

Congestion Surcharge
Most carriers have filed a Port Congestion Surcharge applicable to all shipments to/from ports in the United States and Canada addressing the potential risk of significantly increased port congestion as a result of any labor related issues on or after September 30, 2012. The amounts of the surcharges are:
USD 800 per 20' Container USD 1,000 per 40' Container USD 1,125 per 40' HC USD 1,266 per 45' Container The carriers are calling this a forward filing as a precaution to address the potential for congestion as result of possible labor actions. Should there be no labor action and subsequent congestion disrupting operations, the surcharge will not be implemented. |
