Beware of Wire Transfer Scams
There have been an increasing number of scams lately in relation to false bank detail information. It appears that hackers intercept suppliers' payment requests, sent out by email, change the invoice by adding false bank account information and then send them on to the client. One company for instance placed an order with a South-Chinese jewellery supplier, with headquarters in Hong Kong, and received account details for a completely different owner, on to whose account the invoiced amount was then wrongly transferred. The error was only noticed a while later, when the Hong Kong based company sent a reminder for the still unpaid invoice to the buyer. To be safe, the following should be noted/checked: - Does the payment demand come from the same email address, through which you had previous contact?
- Even if this is the case you should take particular care if contact is made without SSL-Email Encryption, something that is often the case with free email providers like "Yahoo", "Hotmail", "163.com", "Shou.com" and others.
- Are the name of the account holder and the place of the account holding bank consistent with the supplier's originally transmitted contact and account data? You should never make transfers to private accounts.
- Is the style of writing in the email noticeably different?
- Does the (pro-forma) invoice correspond with the company's usual font, style and contact details?
- In case of doubt it is imperative that you confirm the receipt and details of the invoice with the supplier by telephone.
If you have already made a payment to a false account, you should get in contact with your bank immediately. If the transfer hasn't yet been booked on the other side, the transaction can still be cancelled for instance. Unfortunately, the bank in China or Hong Kong can rarely help in such cases. If a transfer cancellation is no longer possible, the only other thing left to do is to report the crime to the local authorities. |
