| Leprino Foods Pledges $5 Million to Enhance Dairy Foods Activities at Cal Poly | |
Cal Poly's Dairy Science Department will receive $5 million from Denver-based Leprino Foods Company.
The pledge will be paid over the next two years and will support an endowed faculty position, cover costs to remodel dairy science teaching laboratories, and provide initial start-up costs for a new master's degree program. Read More |

| Global Cheese Technology Forum | |
 Cheese and whey production in the US West and its place in the global economy will be the theme for this year's Global Cheese Technology Forum (GCTF) being held October 11-12, 2011 at the Peppermill Resort in Reno, NV. The conference is being organized collaboratively by the Dairy Products Technology Center (DPTC) at California Polytechnic State University and the Western Dairy Center at Utah State University. The Second Cow Nutrition and Milk Quality International Symposium | |
The Second Cow Nutrition and Milk Quality International Symposium was successfully held
May 7-9, 2011 in Beijing, China. It was jointly organized by the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences Beijing Institute of Animal Sciences, American Dairy Science Association and the Dairy Association of China. The purpose of this session was to improve the production efficiency, quality, and safety of milk.
Thirty four presentation s were given from dairy experts from China, the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, New Zealand and Brazil. Dr. Phil Tong gave an invited presentation entitled: Chemical, Microbiological and Physical Milk Quality Expectations from Farm to Processor. In addition, Dr. Marie Yeung (Asst. Professor, Microbiology, Cal Poly) gave a presentation on: Advanced Molecular Methods to Monitor Milk Quality and Safety.
The 600+ attendees to the conference were from 33 colleges and universities, 17 research institutes, 41 Departments or Provincial Quality and Safety of Dairy Testing Centers and 100 dairy cow technology departments. For more info see: www.dairy973.com/international |
| Applications Lab Update by Katy Lees | |
As mentioned in the last Applications Lab update, we are looking forward to the upcoming IFT 2011 in New Orleans on June 11th - June 14th. We have finalized our new prototypes that we will be showing at this year's meeting. Some of our prototypes that we will be presenting are focusing on protein snacks, foods for healthy aging and using yogurt as an ingredient. Please stop by the DMI booth (# 6139) to try them. Also registration is still open for the pre-conference short course- Ingredient Applications for Product Innovation and Consumer Health, Dr. Phil Tong will be one of the speakers. We enjoyed hosting our 23rd Annual Industry Cheese Short course on March 22-25. We had a great turn out mostly by many larger cheese companies. We would like to thank them for participating in our course this spring.
We look forward to many more participants in the future Farmstead and Industry Cheese Short Courses.
Exciting and new Innovations are being created in the Applications Lab. We are working on new advances in the application of novel dairy products/ingredients and are looking forward to future applications for protein and nutrient value added products.
We are excited to be assisting a variety of product developers with some new applications for dairy products and ingredients. We are glad to be of assistance to the industry and small business product developers here on the West Coast. We look forward to assisting with many more innovative projects throughout the year. | New Faces at DPTC |
Mariela Poveda is an MS student with Dr. Jimenez's group. She will focus on composite gel structures and other physical and chemical aspects of milk ingredients.

MaximeSaffon is a visiting scholar working with Dr. Jimenez's group. He is a PhD student from Laval University in Quebec, Canada. His research at the DPTC will focus on milk protein and lipid aggregation, particles with milk phospholipids and composite dairy gels.
Lauren Collinsworth is a first year graduate student from Pleasanton, CA. She graduated from Cal Poly in June 2009 with a Bachelor degree in Nutrition. Lauren will be working on her Masters in Dairy Products Technology at the DPTC under Dr. Lammert.
 Melissa Hsu is a first year graduate student from Northbrook, IL. She graduated from the University of Illinois in December, 2009 with a Bachelor degree in Food Science. Melissa will be working on her Masters in Dairy Products Technology at the DPTC under Dr. Tong |
